Ariel Sharón quien falleció ayer a los 85 años, nació el 21 de febrero de 1921 en el kibutz Kfar Malal. Dedicó su vida al servicio de su país. Al recorrer su vida encontramos que perteneció a la Haganá y combatió en 1948 en la Primera Guerra Árabe Israelí. Se recibió de abogado en las universidades de Jerusalem y Tel Aviv y logró destacarse, no sin problemas de obediencia a sus superiores, en la guerra de los 6 días en 1967.
Quizás su éxito más reconocido como militar fue haber logrado en 1973, en la Guerra de Kipur, detener a las tropas israelíes a las puertas mismas de El Cairo.
Su vida política no fue menos intensa que la militar, ya que fue fundador del movimiento «ShlomTzion» y luego adscribió al Likud del cual también fue fundador.
Sin dudas Sharón fue una de las figuras más representativas de la derecha nacionalista israelí. Fue ministro de agricultura en el gobierno de Menajem Beguin, desde donde impulsó la colonización de Cisjordania y Gaza.
No hay dudas de que su capítulo personal más conflictivo es el que lo tiene de protagonista como Ministro de Defensa durante el Proceso de Paz para Galilea, que en la Guerra del Líbano del año 1982 desemboca en la matanza de Shabra y Shatila, de refugiados palestinos, de la cual una comisión investigadora israelí lo halló responsable.
Volvió a la política de la mano de Bibi Netanyahu en 1996 y, liderando el Likud, ganó las elecciones de 2001 con una amplia mayoría. Esa gestión tiene importantes hitos que deben recordarse para entender y conocer la vida política israelí y del Medio Oriente: El confinamiento de Arafat en la Mukata por hacerlo responsable de las olas de atentados terroristas en Israel y la segunda Intifada, su aceptación a la Hoja de Ruta, el plan de paz de Madrid, su decisión unilateral de la Desconexión de Gazay el gesto de que la Kneset lo apruebe y, por sobre todo, la evacuación de 8000 colonos judíos de la Franja de Gaza, siendo la primera vez que Israel abandonó territorio reclamado por palestinos y, más aún, siendo Sharón el iniciador y defensor de esa política de colonización. Fue esta ultima acción la que produjo el rompimiento del Likud y el nacimiento de su mano de Kadima.
No hay dudas que Israel y el pueblo judío despide hoy a uno de sus principales actores políticos y líder contemporáneo. Como siempre, la política encontrará amigos y adversarios, defensores y críticos a ultranza, pero no han de quedar dudas de que Israel, aquel diciembre de 2005, con el infarto cerebral que se le produjo, perdió a uno de sus hombres más valiosos en su mejor momento político.
Ariel Sharón fue un estadista y un hombre de acción entregado a su país. La historia, como siempre, dirá lo suyo con el tiempo.
