El pasado domingo 7 de octubre, frente a un horizonte dominado por el perfil de la Ciudad Vieja, cientos de jóvenes cristianos evangélicos se reunieron en Jerusalén en ocasión del evento denominado “Día de Oración por la Paz en Jerusalén”.
Estos jóvenes regresarán a sus comunidades en unos 30 países con conocimiento de primera mano acerca de la realidad de Israel y entender a la profundidad lo que se esconde detrás de las noticias. Esta es una de las metas que la organización neoyorkina Eagles’ Wings (Alas de Águila) logró exitosamente durante el evento. Su principal representante, Jack Hayford, reconoce los particulares intereses y motivaciones de estas nuevas generaciones y ha organizado un evento a la medida, justo y necesario.
Hayford, junto al pastor Robert Stearns, crearon hace 12 años un programa que permite a los jóvenes viajar a Israel y ser conducidos a través de su realidad cotidiana y lugares de interés, a lo que no tendrían acceso desde sus países de origen. El evento viene a ser una acción para contrarrestar lo que muchos consideran como la influencia negativa de los medios de comunicación sobre la imagen de Israel en el mundo.
Así es como desde el año 2002 Eagle’s Wings celebra el primer domingo de cada octubre el “Día de Oración por la Paz en Jerusalén”, un encuentro de cientos de miles de personas alrededor del mundo que aprovecha los medios digitales interconectados globalmente y en tiempo real.
Este es el mayor evento religioso de su tipo en el mundo y se realiza para orar por la paz en Jerusalén, en el que “[…] la visión es la intercesión global sostenida, ferviente e informada por la paz de Jerusalén y de toda su gente, que se levanta del corazón de cada creyente en cada nación del planeta”, tal como se lee en la página web de la organización.
En el marco del evento, Eagles’ Wings ofrece un paquete de viaje que permite la asistencia a Jerusalén, el corazón mismo de Israel. El programa incluye visitas guiadas y eventos que ofrecen una visión de primera mano y sin intermediarios a los visitantes interesados.
Los creadores de este evento consideran que es una vía importante para reforzar la conexión entre los cristianos e Israel y servir como contrapeso a acciones como las que recientemente hicieron eco en la UNESCO, que buscan negar los lazos históricos entre el judaísmo y la ciudad de Jerusalén (y de muchos de los lugares santos del judeo-cristianismo), considerándolos lugares solamente conectados con la religión musulmana.
El evento este año resaltó los 51 años de la reunificación de Jerusalén y los 70 años de la creación del Estado de Israel. Además de contar con el apoyo de “más de 1200 líderes cristianos evangélicos en el mundo”, reunió a importantes personalidades diplomáticas y religiosas de Israel y los EEUU.
Más importante aún fue que el público asistente estaba compuesto por seguidores del cristianismo y del judaísmo, rabinos y pastores, en una clara demostración de coexistencia y hermandad.
Para la comunidad cristiana evangélica mundial, según algunos de sus líderes, es momento de reflexión y arrepentimiento por los acciones del pasado en las que se perjudicaron a los judíos. A la luz de las declaraciones que se escucharon en el evento de parte de las personalidades civiles, gubernamentales y religiosas que se dirigieron a la nutrida y mixta audiencia en Jerusalén, se resaltó que con el nuevo siglo ha comenzado una era de esplendor en la relación entre cristianos evangélicos e Israel.
