John T. Earnest fue condenado con cadena perpetua tras declararse culpable de asesinato e intento de asesinato en el tiroteo mortal de 2019 en una sinagoga de California.

El autor del ataque asumió los cargos y pasará el resto de su vida en prisión sin posibilidad de libertad condicional como parte de un acuerdo que lo salvará de la muerte.

Armado con un rifle estilo AR-15, Earnest, de 19 años en ese momento, mató a Lori Gilbert Kaye (60), quien estaba allí para honrar a su difunta madre. El juez de la Corte Superior de San Diego, Peter Deddeh, aceptó las declaraciones de Earnest y se fijó una audiencia de sentencia para el 30 de septiembre.

En un comunicado, la oficina del fiscal de distrito dijo que esperan que la cadena perpetua para Earnest sea «una resolución adecuada a este violento crimen de odio y esperamos que traiga una medida de justicia y cierre a las víctimas, sus familias, amigos y la comunidad en general».

El hombre condenado con cadena perpetua por el ataque a la sinagoga de California aún enfrenta más de un centenar de cargos federales y delitos de odio. Entre ellos se incluyen 54 cargos de obstrucción del libre ejercicio de creencias religiosas que resultaron en muerte y lesiones corporales y que involucran el intento de matar.
