Una casa de subastas se aprestaba a vender 17 rollos funerarios y manuscritos robados a comunidades judías de Europa del este en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cuando la policía de Nueva York los confiscó, informó el jueves la fiscalía federal de Brooklyn.
«La recuperación de estos rollos y manuscritos que datan del siglo XIX, robados durante el Holocausto en Rumania, Hungría, Ucrania y Eslovaquia (…) es la culminación de una larga investigación sobre la propiedad cultural», dijo uno de los investigadores, Peter Fitzhugh, del departamento de Seguridad Interior, citado en un comunicado de la fiscalía.

Los investigadores se enteraron en febrero pasado que una casa de subastas de Brooklyn, Kestenbaum & Company, había colocado en venta estos objetos que datan de 1840 a la Segunda Guerra Mundial: entre los documentos hay plegarias para los muertos, reglas comunitarias, nombres de líderes religiosos y, a veces, nombres de miembros de la comunidad deportados a Auschwitz.
La venta se suspendió a pedido de la comunidad judía de la ciudad rumana de Cluj, y de la World Jewish Restitution Organization.
Esta organización, creada tras la caída de los regímenes comunistas de Europa del este, está especializada en la restitución de bienes judíos robados.
Entre los objetos recuperados figura un cuaderno con datos históricos de la comunidad judía de Cluj.
Aunque la casa de subastas cooperó con la justicia, los investigadores prefirieron incautarse de los documentos por miedo a que intentara separarse de ellos.

«Hay compradores en todo el mundo para estos objetos, que pueden ser fácilmente vendidos o transferidos y así frustrar los esfuerzos gubernamentales que buscan devolverlos a los sobrevivientes y descendientes de estas comunidades», indicaron en un documento presentado ante la corte.

La fiscalía no dio ninguna indicación sobre la fecha en que los objetos se devolverán.
