Luego de las Altas Fiestas viene Sucot, una festividad de siete días (ocho en la Diáspora) caracterizada por las sucot que construimos al aire libre y las “Cuatro Especies” que agitamos juntas cada día.

Sucot es una festividad de gran alegría, en la que expresamos nuestra completa confianza en Dios, y celebramos nuestra certidumbre de haber recibido “un buen juicio” para el año siguiente.

Durante toda la semana de Sucot, comemos, dormimos y compartimos en la sucá, recordándonos que:

1. Los israelitas vivieron en cabañas durante los 40 años de deambular por el desierto.

2. Dios es nuestra verdadera protección – así como protegió a los israelitas en el desierto con las Nubes de Gloria (Éxodo 13:21).

Las Cuatro Especies

En Sucot, se nos ordena agitar las “Cuatro Especies”, cada una denotada por su belleza especial:

1. Etrog – la cidra, una fruta con fragancia que posee una gruesa cáscara blanca. A menudo es cosechada del árbol cuando todavía está verde, y luego madura y se torna amarrillo brillante.

2. Lulav – la rama de palmera, que es definida como bella por tener una forma recta y hojas firmemente unidas.

3. Hadás – la rama de mirto, que tiene un hermoso patrón de tres hojas saliendo desde el mismo punto a lo largo de toda de la rama.

4. Aravá – la rama de sauce, que debe tener hojas alargadas con una punta fina.

Juntamos todas las ramas – dos ramas de sauce a la izquierda, una rama de palmera en el centro, y tres ramas de mirto a la derecha. Las levantamos junto con el Etrog y las agitamos en todas las direcciones, como un símbolo del dominio de Dios sobre toda la Creación.

Las cuatro especies son agitadas todos los días (a excepción de Shabat) en la sinagoga, durante la recitación de las plegarias de alabanza de Halel. La recitación de Halel es seguida por Hoshanot, en donde todos circulan alrededor de un rollo de la Torá puesto sobre la Bimá.

“Embellecer” la mitzvá consiguiendo las mejores especies disponibles es una tradición especial. En última instancia, hay requisitos específicos para que sean válidas para cumplir la mitzvá. Como los detalles son muchos y técnicos, no se recomienda que busques las tuyas en el bosque (Particularmente el Etrog, que puede ser fácilmente confundido con un limón). Compra un set completo de un distribuidor confiable; tu tienda local de libros de judaísmo debería tener un “Set de las Cuatro Especies” con un sello rabínico certificando su validez.

La Sucá

Construir tu propia Sucá es una excelente actividad para compartir con tu familia y amigos. La Sucá debe tener al menos 70×70 cm. Puede estar construida en un patio, en el balcón de un departamento, o hasta en la espalda de un elefante.

Tu Sucá necesita tener al menos dos paredes completas y una pequeña parte de una tercera. Las paredes pueden ser de cualquier material, siempre y cuando sean lo suficientemente robustas para soportar un viento normal. Las paredes deberían ser de al menos 96 cm de alto, pero no más altas de 9,6 metros.

No hace falta que construyas paredes especialmente para la Sucá; puedes utilizar el costado de un edificio, o hasta un cerco de arbustos. Y si puedes encontrar un área que ya está cerrada por dos o tres paredes, ¡entonces tu trabajo será mucho más fácil!

El material del techo (Sjaj) debe estar hecho de algún material que crece del suelo – por ejemplo ramas y hojas (pero no metal). Si estás utilizando tablas, no pueden tener más de 40 cm de ancho. Además, el material debe estar desconectado del suelo en la actualidad (es decir, no puede ser un árbol que todavía esta plantado con sus raíces en el suelo). Esto significa que nada puede estar colgando por encima de la Sucá – ni un árbol, ni una canaleta, ni un equipo de aire acondicionado, etc.

El techo debe estar lo suficientemente cubierto para dar más sombra que sol durante el día, pero debería ser lo suficientemente abierto para que las estrellas sean visibles a través de él durante la noche. El material del techo sólo puede ser agregado después de que está ubicada la cantidad de paredes requerida.

Como la Sucá es designada como tu “hogar” por los próximos siete días, es costumbre decorarla. Mucha gente cuelga frutas y flores desde el techo, y pega posters de Jerusalem y otros temas judíos en las paredes.

También es tradicional “recibir” a los siete pastores de Israel (Abraham, Itzjak, Yaakov, Moshé, Aharón, Yosef y David) como invitados (ushpizin) en nuestra Sucá durante toda la festividad.

Más Tradiciones de Sucot

Es una mitzvá especial regocijarse en Sucot. Por esta razón, los días intermedios de Sucot se caracterizan por celebraciones llamadas Simjat Beit HaShoeva, conmemorando las libaciones de agua que eran ofrecidas en el Templo durante Sucot.

La festividad de Sucot está relacionada directamente con el “agua”, ya que es el día del juicio universal respecto a las bendiciones de lluvia e irrigación para el año venidero.

Sucot también es un tiempo de bendición universal para todos los pueblos –simbolizados por las 70 ofrendas adicionales que se ofrecían en el Templo durante la festividad, que correspondían a las 70 naciones del mundo.

El Libro de Eclesiastés, escrito por el Rey Salomón, es leído en Shabat durante Sucot. El tema de Eclesiastés es la vana persecución de placeres mundanos en contraposición a la búsqueda espiritual eterna. En realidad, la frágil construcción de la Sucá nos recuerda que las posesiones materiales son transitorias.

El séptimo día de Sucot es llamado Hoshaná Rabá, que se caracteriza por la procesión de los siete circuitos alrededor de la Bimá, con las Cuatro Especies en la mano. La procesión culmina con el aporreo de la rama de sauce en el piso. Hoshaná Rabá es conocido como el día del sello final del juicio que comenzó en Rosh Hashaná. En Hoshaná Rabá, algunos tienen la costumbre de leer el Libro de Deuteronomio y permanecer despiertos toda la noche estudiando Torá.

Sheminí Atzeret y Simjat Torá

Inmediatamente después de Sucot hay una festividad más llamada Sheminí Atzeret, literalmente el “Octavo Día de Asamblea”. Este es un tiempo para cesar la ajetreada actividad de la temporada de fiestas y simplemente saborear la relación especial con Dios antes de meternos en la temporada de invierno. Es una festividad separada de Sucot, por esta razón, recitamos la bendición de Sheejeianu nuevamente, y la obligación de morar en la Sucá ya no aplica.

En Sheminí Atzéret se recita Yizkor en la sinagoga.

El día siguiente es Simjat Torá, que celebra la finalización – y nuevo comienzo – del ciclo anual de lectura de la Torá. En la sinagoga, se sacan del Arca todos los rollos de Torá, y la congregación baila “siete circuitos” en medio de gran alegría y cantos.

En Israel, Simjat Torá se celebra el mismo día que Sheminí Atzéret.
