Una empresa israelí desarrolla terapia en pacientes con cáncer avanzado

La compañía israelí Compugen, que hace investigaciones y fármacos en inmunoterapia para el cáncer, reveló resultados preliminares alentadores de su ensayo clínico de fase 1 para un anticuerpo que actúa contra un nuevo objetivo de medicamento contra tumores malignos (PVRIG, por sus siglas en inglés) en pacientes con cáncer avanzado.

Compugen, que es pionera en el descubrimiento predictivo de dianas terapéuticas, ha desarrollado plataformas innovadoras de descubrimiento computacional para identificar nuevas dianas de medicamentos y, posteriormente, producir terapias de primera clase.

El ensayo clínico del anticuerpo anti-PVRIG, llamado COM701, tenía como objetivo evaluar la seguridad de las crecientes dosis de la terapia en pacientes con tumores sólidos avanzados, pero también demostró señales iniciales de actividad antitumoral en la población de pacientes fuertemente pretratados que participaron en el estudio.

“Estamos animados por el perfil de seguridad emergente y las señales iniciales de actividad antitumoral de COM701”, comentó la Dra. Anat Cohen-Dayan, presidenta y directora ejecutiva de Compugen. Y agregó: “Si bien el objetivo principal de esta parte del ensayo era probar la seguridad y la tolerancia del COM701, nos entusiasmó observar señales tempranas de actividad antitumoral en la población de pacientes que participaron en el estudio”.

El estudio de fase 1, que se espera que incluya un total de aproximadamente 140 personas, actualmente está reclutando pacientes adicionales en Estados Unidos. Los datos clínicos preliminares se presentarán este viernes en Maryland durante la 34ª Reunión Anual de la Sociedad para la Inmunoterapia del Cáncer (SITC, por sus siglas en inglés).

“Nuestra hipótesis, basada en la ciencia de COM701 y PVRIG, es que las pacientes que tienen más probabilidades de beneficiarse serán aquellas con cáncer de mama, ovario, endometrio y cáncer de pulmón no microcítico”, explicó Cohen-Dayan e instó a la precaución a pesar de los resultados preliminares positivos.

Como la única compañía con candidatos clínicos dirigidos tanto a PVRIG como a TIGIT, mantenemos una posición diferenciada en el espacio inmuno-oncológico”, aseveró Cohen-Dayan.

Compugen anunció que había recibido la aprobación de la FDA para su nueva solicitud de medicamento en investigación de COM902, dirigida a TIGIT en pacientes con cáncer avanzado. La empresa planea iniciar un ensayo clínico de fase 1 a principios de 2020 para pacientes que hasta ahora no se han beneficiado de las terapias estándar.
