El Consejo de Ministros del Gobierno que preside Binyamin Netanyahu aprobó un proyecto de ley para definir a Israel como «estado judío», tras una alborotada sesión en la que el primer ministro se enfrentó a gritos con varios de sus ministros.
El proyecto fue aprobado con los votos a favor de los tres partidos nacionalistas -Likud, Israel Beitenu y Habait Haihudí (Hogar Judío)-, mientras que en contra se pronunciaron los del partido de centro Yesh Atid, la ministra de Justicia, Tzipi Livni, y la de deportes Limor Livnat (esta última del Likud).
«En el Estado de Israel hay igualdad individual para todos los ciudadanos, pero el derecho nacional sólo para el pueblo judío», dijo el primer ministro al abrir la turbulenta sesión del Consejo.
El proyecto de ley, propuesta por cuatro diputado nacionalistas, pasó por 15 votos a favor y 7 en contra, tras una sesión en la que Netanyahu se enfrentó a Livni y a varios ministros del partido Yesh Atid, que dirige el titular de Finanzas, Yair Lapid.
Este último lo describió como «una ley fatal que está redactada únicamente para las primarias del Likud», en tanto que varios ministros recordaron al policía druso muerto esta semana defendiendo una sinagoga para apelar al buen juicio de los ministros.
«¿Que le dirán a su familia, que es un ciudadano de segunda?», se quejaron al instar a Netanyahu a reconsiderar su postura.
El proyecto de ley forma parte de la política del Likud y de Israel Beitenu desde la pasada legislatura, y desde hace meses es discutido para llegar a una fórmula de consenso para todos los partidos en el Gobierno.
Al no ser posible, y debido a un problema de índole burocrático en el proceso de legislación, la propuesta que aprobó el Consejo de Ministros es en realidad una fusión de dos proyectos de ley individuales de la derecha, que pasarán ahora a votación preliminar en el Parlamento.
Netanyahu espera después, cuando el texto llegue a comisión, moderar los elementos notoriamente nacionalistas a los que hace alusión, de forma que el carácter judío de Israel sea equiparable -y no superior- a su carácter democrático, en una muestra de respeto a las distintas minorías, en su inmensa mayoría de origen árabe.
El proyecto es visto con recelo por éstas porque que temen ver atropellados sus derechos civiles en el futuro.
También eliminará Netanyahu la demanda de que el hebreo sea la única lengua oficial del país, elevada por la derecha.
«No habríamos llegado aquí si Livni se hubiera comportado de otra manera», se quejó el primer ministro al justificarse por el tener que haber aceptado los proyectos de ley individuales, en lugar de que el Gobierno consensuara uno más moderado.
La legislación nacional se había abstenido de definir al Estado de Israel como «estado judío» desde su concepción en 1948, aunque la Declaración de Independencia de ese año así lo estipula.
