Así lo destacó el ministro español de Asuntos Exteriores, José Manuel García-Margallo, al inaugurar la exposición, que bajo el título «Más allá del deber», rinde homenaje a estos diplomáticos y que estará abierta al público en el Palacio de Santa Cruz en Madrid, sede del Ministerio de Exteriores, hasta el 19 de diciembre.
«Incluso en momentos en los que la naturaleza humana parece alcanzar su punto de mayor abyección, hay personas cuya fortaleza moral y capacidad de sacrificio en aras del bien común nos redime a todos», dijo de esos héroes García-Margallo.
Son Ángel Sanz Briz, Miguel Ángel Muguiro, Sebastián Romero Rodrigales, el padre Ireneo Typaldos, José Rojas, Manuel Gómez Barzanallana, Julio Palencia, Eduardo Gasset, Bernardo Rolland, Alfonso Fiscowich, Eduardo Propper, Alejandro Pons, José Ruiz Santaella, Antonio Zuloaga, Luis Martínez Merello, Fernando Canthal, Jorge (Giorgio) Perlasca y Santos Montero (Samuel Skornicki).
Al acto de inauguración asistieron altos cargos del Gobierno español así como embajadores acreditados en España, entre ellos el de Israel, Alon Bar, y familiares de los diplomáticos.
La muestra contiene decenas de documentos y de recuerdos personales de los 18 diplomáticos y otros miembros del Servicio Exterior español, cuya «valerosa actuación, llevada a cabo más allá del estricto cumplimiento del deber, iluminó tiempos oscuros marcados por la barbarie y que no deben caer en el olvido», destacó el ministro.
El jefe de la diplomacia española señaló que su labor «ha de ser fuente de inspiración para todos» especialmente en un momento en que la sociedad está «ávida» de referentes morales.
El ministro advirtió de que «retornan ideologías del odio, el antisemitismo es una de esas ideologías, que tiene una increíble capacidad de mutación y difusión. Es un vino viejo corrupto y corruptor que siempre parece encontrar nuevos odres», dijo.
Se refirió a aquellos que «escudándose» en el conflicto de Oriente Medio intentan justificar ese antisemitismo y aseguró que España está «empeñada en superar esta falacia» y que, como miembro del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU, no escatimará esfuerzos para alcanzar «una solución justa y duradera» basada en la existencia de los dos Estados.
La exposición es fruto de una investigación auspiciada por el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores sobre más de 120 diplomáticos españoles que dará lugar a un libro que verá la luz el próximo año.
Entre todos estos diplomáticos, destaca Ángel Sanz Briz, conocido como «El Ángel de Budapest», que salvó a más de 5.200 judíos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Su hijo Juan Carlos ha sido la voz de los familiares de estos diplomáticos homenajeados.
«Representan una pequeña minoría que no miraron hacia otro lado, no fueron indiferentes ante la injusticia y el dolor ajeno. Actuaron de forma justa y valiente y nunca esperaron reconocimiento ni recompensa. Es más, guardaron silencio de sus acciones humanitarias durante muchos años», rememoró.
«Sus logros cayeron en el olvido durante décadas y sus méritos sólo fueron reconocidos a título póstumo. Fueron hombres de bien, con grandes valores morales. Hoy los consideramos héroes, ellos murieron sin saberlo», añadió.
Yehuda Bauer, presidente honorario de la Alianza Internacional para la Memoria del Holocausto (IHRA), elogió el papel que jugaron esos diplomáticos españoles «en un momento oscuro de la historia».
El presidente de la Federación de Comunidades Judías de España, Isaac Querub Caro, subrayó por su parte la imagen del Servicio Exterior español en el que hubo personas que, con independencia del contexto político, «se comprometieron por la salvación de los perseguidos por el régimen nazi».
«En medio del mal atroz y absoluto, surgió el noble hacer de personas justas que ayudaron a los perseguidos, en algunos casos miles, decenas de miles de judíos, como atestiguan los documentos de Sanz Briz, y en otros menos, centenas, como el más reciente reconocido Justo entre las Naciones, Romero Radigales» añadió.
