La amenaza del grupo Estado Islámico (ISIS, por sus siglas en inglés) va en aumento pese a los esfuerzos militares en su contra, y la violencia extremista interna es el mayor peligro para Estados Unidos, dijo el director de inteligencia estadounidense, James Clapper.
«El ISIS tiene una creciente capacidad de dirigir e inspirar ataques contra un amplio espectro de objetivos en el mundo», comentó Clapper en un informe al Congreso, y agregó que los islamistas radicados en Estados Unidos representan «la amenaza terrorista sunita más significativa» para el país.
«El éxito percibido de ataques cometidos por extremistas violentos locales en Europa y Norteamérica, como los de Chattanooga y San Bernardino, pueden motivar a otros a replicar ataques oportunistas con poca o ninguna advertencia, disminuyendo nuestra capacidad de detectar la planeación y preparación de operativos terroristas», alertó Clapper.
La advertencia fue hecha durante la evaluación anual realizada por las agencias de inteligencia sobre los principales riesgos que enfrenta el país.
«El involucramiento del Estado Islámico en actividad de ataques en territorio nacional posiblemente involucre a aquellos que se inspiran en los medios de comunicación altamente sofisticados del grupo sin guía directa del liderazgo de ISIS», dijo, aludiendo a las siglas en inglés del grupo extremista.
Clapper agregó que Irán sigue siendo el principal estado patrocinador del terrorismo, que grupos vinculados a Al Qaeda han resistido y que Estados Unidos seguirá viendo ciberamenazas desde China, Rusia y Corea del Norte.
