“APOE4 es un objetivo muy importante y poco estudiado”, dijo el profesor Michaelson. “Se manifiesta en más del 60 por ciento de los pacientes de Alzheimer. Por lo tanto se espera que los tratamientos anti-APOE4 tengan un gran impacto en la población de pacientes”.
La principal diferencia entre la forma buena del gen y la forma mala es la forma en que interactúa con los lípidos. El gen bueno lleva muchos más lípidos.
Los investigadores manipularon genéticamente ratones que tienen el gen malo y vieron que estos ratones presentaron una disminución de la memoria y la función mental. Luego, los investigadores encontraron una manera de solucionar el deterioro del gen malo, que le permite llevar muchos más lípidos y mejorar su función.
