El único libro que firmó Françoise Frenkel llevaba 70 años extraviado. Reapareció en un mercadillo de Niza en 2010, cuando fue encontrado por un bibliófilo intrigado por su sobria portada y su enigmático título: Rien où poser la tête(Ningún sitio donde reclinar la cabeza). Al abrirlo, descubrió el testimonio de una judía polaca, fundadora de la primera librería francesa de Berlín en 1921, que cruzó el continente escapando a la persecución de los nazis. De la capital alemana a París, y de ahí hasta Niza, desde donde logrará cruzar la frontera con Suiza tras dos intentos fallidos. Seis años después de ese descubrimiento, llega a las librerías traducido como Una librería en Berlín (Seix Barral), tras haberse convertido en uno de los fenómenos del año pasado en Francia.
Frenkel murió en enero de 1975. No dejó ningún rastro tras ella, salvo un puñado de documentos: su partida de nacimiento, su firma en el registro de la frontera suiza, un expediente de indemnización por los bienes que le embargaron los nazis. Estaban encerrados en un baúl que contenía un abrigo de piel de nutria, una gabardina negra, dos vestidos de punto, un paraguas, dos pares de zapatos y dos máquinas de escribir. Eso es todo lo que se sabe de ella. A día de hoy, no se ha encontrado ninguna fotografía de la autora. “¿En realidad hace falta saber más? No lo creo”, pregunta y contesta Patrick Modiano, Nobel de Literatura en 2014 y gran experto en los días de la ocupación nazi, en el prólogo del libro. “La gran singularidad de Una librería en Berlín es justamente que no podamos identificar a su autora de una manera precisa”, añade Modiano. Françoise Frenkel podría ser uno de los personajes del novelista, siempre con el rostro empañado por la niebla de la memoria.
La autora concluyó el manuscrito de Una librería en Berlín en 1944 a la orilla del Lago de los Cuatro Cantones, en el corazón de Suiza, donde la extinta editorial Jeheber lo publicaría un año más tarde. Sintiéndose, por fin, a salvo, Frenkel tomó la pluma para reflejar su experiencia. Pero lo hizo con una inhabitual contención. Más que una denuncia de la persecución y la vida en la clandestinidad a lo largo de su periplo, la obra está pensada como un homenaje “a los hombres de buena voluntad y valentía inagotable” que lograron “resistir hasta el final”. La escritora dejó los pasajes más traumáticos de su existencia al margen de sus páginas. Frenkel se esfuerza en subrayar la generosidad de los extraños. Insinúa los comportamientos mezquinos con un irónico desdén. El nombre de su marido, Simon Rachenstein, deportado a Auschwitz en 1942, ni siquiera aparece mencionado.
También es un relato sobre su pasión por la literatura, que sintió desde una edad muy temprana, cuando Frenkel “podía pasar las horas muertas hojeando un libro con imágenes o un gran volumen ilustrado”. Su librería, La Maison du Livre, fue algo parecido a un templo. Frenkel la define incluso como su “razón de ser”. Por ella pasaron André Gide, Apollinaire o Colette. En la Alemania francófoba de después del Tratado de Versalles, ese espacio se convirtió en un lugar “de olvido y desahogo, donde uno respiraba libremente”. Frenkel también firma una carta de amor a la cultura francesa y los valores universalistas con los que sigue asociada. Su auténtico nombre de pila era Frymeta, que convirtió en Françoise por el apego que sentía por su patria imaginaria.
Una librería en Berlín, que ya ha sido traducido a siete idiomas, volvió a la vida gracias al esfuerzo de Thomas Simonnet, de la editorial Gallimard —donde es editor de L’Arbalète, colección histórica donde publicaron Sartre y Jean Genet— y Frédéric Maria, consultor editorial para la francesa P.O.L. y la española Acantilado. “Varias editoriales se interesaron por él, pero algunas aspiraban a introducir cambios. Yo me negué a tocar el manuscrito”, afirma el segundo. Solo alguna expresión en desuso ha sido modificada para favorecer su comprensión. Maria también se encargó de seguir la pista a Frenkel para verificar la autenticidad del texto y recabar una serie de documentos históricos que aparecen publicados al final del libro.
Para Maria, el valor de este texto es incalculable. “Frenkel nunca dice explícitamente que es judía, pero se erige en portavoz de ese pueblo que busca la tierra prometida”, asegura sobre esta desconocida escritora. Puede que descubrir las páginas legadas por una mujer sobre la que no existía una sola referencia en Internet hasta 2010 no hagan más que intensificar la experiencia de la lectura. “Prefiero no conocer el rostro de Frenkel, ni las peripecias de su vida tras la guerra, ni la fecha de su muerte”, afirma Modiano en su prefacio. “De ese modo, su libro será siempre para mí la carta de una desconocida, olvidada en la lista de correos desde hace una eternidad y que parece que recibes por error, aunque tal vez eras, en realidad, su destinatario”.
LITERATURA RESUCITADA
Los testimonios sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial cotizan al alza en el mercado literario, cada vez más atraído por los manuscritos inéditos y los libros redescubiertos. Antes que Françoise Frenkel estuvo Irène Nemirovsky y su Suite francesa, novela inconclusa de un millar de páginas que fue encontrada en una vieja maleta por sus hijas. Sería publicada en 2004 con un éxito apoteósico: hoy supera los 3 millones de ejemplares vendidos en el mundo, con adaptación hollywoodiense incluida. Por su parte, Anagrama editó en 2008 el Diario de Hélène Berr, el cuaderno autobiográfico firmado por una estudiante judía en la Sorbona, también prologado por Patrick Modiano.
Además, durante la década pasada se reeditó Una mujer en Berlín, el relato anónimo de una joven alemana entre los escombros de la capital alemana en 1945, al que parece referirse el título español de la obra de Frenkel. La editorial francesa prefirió ceñirse al original para evitar acusaciones de oportunismo. “Hemos sido particularmente transparentes y escrupulosos”, sostiene el editor Thomas Simonnet, que justifica esta reedición por “la importancia del libro como documento histórico, pero también su valor literario”. El estilo de Frenkel, límpido pero incisivo, distingue a una autora rigurosa y capaz de dar con algo muy difícil para todo escritor: la distancia precisa respecto a su propia historia.
