La Federación de Ajedrez de Túnez emitió una carta indicando que están invitados los jugadores de todos los países, “sin excepción“, a un campeonato internacional de ajedrez que albergará el próximo año.
La carta surgió a la luz tras la creciente presión para permitir que una campeona de ajedrez israelí de 7 años asista al torneo de ajedrez Campeonato Mundial de 2019 en Sousse, Túnez, a pesar de la política actual de ese país de no permitir el ingreso a los israelíes.
La federación había respondido a una investigación de la Federación Mundial de Ajedrez (FIDE), que amenazaba con revocar los privilegios de acogida de Túnez si el país no emitía visas a Liel Levitan y otros israelíes nativos de Haifa antes del evento.
La organización defensora de Israel, StandWithUs, se dirigió a la FIDE a principios de este mes pidiendo aclaraciones sobre si a Levitan se le permitiría participar en el torneo.
StandWithUs comenzó una petición en las redes que provocó cientos de cartas de personas de todo el mundo pidiéndole al país que revocara su política. Túnez e Israel no tienen relaciones diplomáticas y los israelíes deben tener visas concertadas antes de su ingreso.

La decisión del Sr. Vizer debe ser un ejemplo para todas las organizaciones deportivas internacionales. Los competidores deportivos israelíes no deben ser prohibidos. Deberían tener la misma oportunidad“.
Kabilo afirmó que la declaración de la federación es un progreso sin precedentes para los países árabes de dar la bienvenida a los atletas israelíes a las competiciones: “Hemos estado observando el tema del boicot a los atletas israelíes durante mucho tiempo“, dijo Kabilo. “Honestamente, no sé de ninguna instancia en la que la acción civil en línea condujera a un organismo deportivo mundial a presionar a un país árabe para que deje jugar a los israelíes y obtener un compromiso por escrito en ese sentido“.
