El 11 de mayo de 1960, el criminal de guerra nazi Adolf Eichmann, que se había refugiado en Argentina bajo una identidad falsa, fue secuestrado por un comando del servicio secreto israelí después de una cacería de varios años.
Diez días después, fue drogado y vestido con un uniforme de la aerolínea israelí El Al que los agentes del Mossad introdujeron de contrabando en Israel.
Principal responsable de la implementación de la «Solución Final» y del plan de exterminio de los judíos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Eichmann fue juzgado y luego ahorcado en 1962 a la edad de 56 años.
– «Un criminal de guerra arrestado por los israelíes» –
Las fuerzas de seguridad «arrestaron a uno de los mayores criminales de guerra nazis» y pronto será juzgado por un tribunal israelí, anunció el primer ministro David Ben-Gurion el 23 de mayo.
«El hombre de la Solución Final (…) está tras las rejas». «Un criminal de guerra arrestado por los israelíes». La prensa unánime le da la bienvenida a este golpe maestro del estado hebreo.
Fue durante los juicios de Nuremberg (1945-1946) que apareció el nombre de Eichmann y su asombroso papel en la deportación de judíos a los campos de exterminio en Europa del Este. «Un alemán matando a un judío seis millones de veces», fué la expresión del escritor y ganador del premio Nobel Elie Wiesel, sobreviviente de Auschwitz.
El ex jefe de la sección IV B.4 de la Gestapo responsable de la cuestión judía, desapareció después de la caída del Tercer Reich, no sin tener cuidado de destruir los informes sobre sus siniestras actividades, así como las fotos que permitían su identificación
– La pista argentina –
Una cacería comenzó en 1945, llevada a cabo por miembros de la comunidad judía, en particular por Simon Wiesenthal, el famoso «cazador de nazis», sobreviviente de un campo de concentración.
Pero fue en 1957, gracias al fiscal del estado alemán en Hesse, Fritz Bauer, que los servicios israelíes supieron que Eichmann se estaba escondiendo en Argentina bajo el nombre de Ricardo Klement.
Se necesitaron más de dos años de investigación para saber que su hogar, sin agua corriente ni electricidad, estaba ubicado en el distrito de San Fernando, en las afueras de Buenos Aires.
Durante una misión en marzo de 1960, los agentes israelíes ya con fotos de Eichmann, establecen con certeza que Ricardo Klement es de hecho su hombre.
Después de seguirlo en varias oportunidades, Tzvi Aharoni, un agente del Mossad, se ubica en un autobús sentado justo detrás de él. «La tentación de inclinarse hacia adelante y estrangularlo era prácticamente irresistible (…) pero sabía que debería ser juzgado y no asesinado por los que mató»,
Con la luz verde de Ben-Gurion, la operación es orquestada meticulosamente por el comandante en jefe del Mossad, Isser Harel e implementada por Rafi Eitan. «Cuando me encargaron esta misión, sabía que si teníamos éxito, entraríamos en la historia de Israel y la de la humanidad».
El plan estaba programado para llevarlo a cabo el 11 de mayo. Como era gerente de las fábricas de Mercedes-Benz, el ex coronel nazi regresaba todas las tardes a su casa de la calle Garibaldi por la misma ruta y al mismo tiempo.
Poco después de las 8:05 p.m., Eichmann fue interceptado cuando se bajó del autobús. Lucha, pide ayuda antes de ser llevado a un automóvil y escondido debajo de una manta. «Pareció durar un siglo», dijo Aharoni. En el vehículo, Eichmann les dijo en alemán a sus captores: «Ya he aceptado mi destino».
Luego lo llevan a una vivienda alquilada para alojarlo, encadenado a una cama, con los ojos vendados.
«Descubrí sus ojos y revisé sus cicatrices. Cuando estaba seguro de que era él, estreché la mano de mi compañero y le dije que habíamos cumplido nuestra misión ”, dijo Rafi Eitan a la AFP.
El 20 de mayo, el equipo del Mossad lo transportó con un pasaporte israelí falso a bordo de un avión especial de la delegación israelí que asistió al 150 aniversario de la independencia de Argentina.
– «La banalidad del mal» –
El 11 de abril de 1961, Adolf Eichmann, acusado de 15 cargos, apareció por primera vez en público en el tribunal de Jerusalén, que debía escuchar a 111 testigos de cargo.
«Vestido con un traje negro, con una corbata oscura en una camisa blanca y grandes gafas de carey, el acusado, tez gris, frente calva, labios apretados, entró en la caja de cristal reservada para él a las 9 de la mañana».
Para el escritor Haïm Gouri, el juicio dará «por primera vez a los sobrevivientes del genocidio la oportunidad de ser escuchados».
Unos 450 periodistas extranjeros y alrededor de 100 observadores y diplomáticos asistieron a las audiencias.
Junto a Haïm Gouri, los escritores Elie Wiesel, Joseph Kessel, Roger Vailland y Hannah Arendt cubrieron el juicio. El filósofo judío estadounidense publicará en 1963 el libro que se convertirá en una referencia: «Eichmann en Jerusalén», ensayo sobre «la banalidad del mal».
El asociado de Hitler es sentenciado a muerte el 15 de diciembre por crímenes contra el pueblo judío, la humanidad y crímenes de guerra. El 29 de mayo de 1962, su apelación fue desestimada por la Corte Suprema.
Fue ahorcado el 31 de mayo a medianoche. Sus cenizas están esparcidas en el mar, más allá de las aguas territoriales.
