Hoy 25 de noviembre de 2020 murió el ídolo máximo que dio el fútbol argentino: Diego Maradona. Para muchos el mejor jugador de todos los tiempos. Para mi generación, el haber sido testigo contemporáneo de su juego. Siempre dije lo mismo, adentro de la cancha me hizo emocionar como nadie. Y eso es a lo que me quiero referir. Nunca me interesó su vida privada ni su ideología, aunque esté en las antípodas ideológicamente

Yo estuve en la cancha cuando le hizo cuatro goles a Boca en la misma semana en la que Gatti le dijo «gordito». También en Mar del Plata cuando con 15 años le hizo dos goles a San Lorenzo de Mar del Plata. Lo sufrí cuando jugaba contra Chacarita y me levantaba los domingos a la mañana para ver al Nápoli cuando canal 9 nos traía las imágenes. Viví a la par toda su carrera y hasta tuve alguna anécdota personal con él como periodista.

Pero el momento que me llenó de orgullo fue cuando salió a la cancha en el Ramat Gan en Israel y pude ver por televisión el partido que jugó contra la selección local y Argentina ganó 7 a 2 con tres goles de él. Verlo en el Muro de los Lamentos inflaba el pecho, cuando todavía no existían las redes sociales y las fotos de los amigos tenían que llegar antes que las periodísticas.

Para muchos, ese día nació el campeón mundial de México 1986. La selección venía de una serie de amistosos con malos resultados y de un intento de cambiar al DT. Bilardo por parte de algunos sectores del gobierno. Lo que significó que el equipo se vaya 30 días de la Argentina antes del mundial para salirse del contexto que rodeaba a un país que estaba mal ( como siempre) en lo económico y con «ruido» institucional.

La victoria frente a Israel fue el arranque del funcionamiento arrasador del seleccionado que luego se quedaría con la Copa del Mundo en tierras mexicanas. En el lugar que consagró a Maradona como el mejor jugador del planeta. Bilardo pidió y logró repetir la cábala en 1990, y se enfrentó con el equipo nacional israelí diecisiete días antes del debut frente a Camerún en el Mundial de Italia, adonde Argentina llegaría a la final perdiendo con Alemania.

En aquella ocasión, Argentina venció 2-1, con goles de Maradona y Caniggia. Pocos días antes del partido, gran parte de los jugadores fueron recibidos por el primer ministro Itzjak Rabin.

Finalmente, ya con otro director técnico, Alfio Basile -también conocido por su afición a las cábalas-, Argentina volvió a jugar frente a Israel en 1994, pocos días antes del Mundial de 1994, ganando 3-0 pero sin goles de Maradona, ya que marcaron Batistuta, dos veces, y otra vez Caniggia. Después de esos tres viajes de Maradona a Israel, que incluyeron la reunión con Rabin y una visita al Muro de los Lamentos, la relación con Israel cambió. Como cambió su vida. Pero no me interesa para esta crónica.

Hoy murió Diego Armando Maradona, y una parte de cada futbolero del mundo murió con él. Yo prefiero quedarme con el «Pelusa», con «el Diego de la gente», con el que en el mismo momento y en una sola jugada me sacó una lágrima y una sonrisa. Me quiero quedar con el que me hizo sentir orgulloso no solo por cada jugada ni cada gol, sino por visitar y respetar al país que cuando nadie creía, le abrió la puerta para que pueda volar.
