Szilárd Demeter, delegado ministerial y director de un museo literario de Hungría, comparó a George Soros con Adolf Hitler.

En un artículo de opinión afirmó que “Europa es la cámara de gas» del magnate y filántropo húngaro de origen judío. «El gas venenoso fluye de la cápsula de una sociedad abierta y multicultural, que es mortal para el estilo de vida europeo», añadió.

Soros es un multimillonario y filántropo hungaro-estadounidense, sobreviviente del Holocausto y acérrimo crítico del gobierno de Hungría. La comparación que realizó, a su vez, despertó las críticas de la comunidad judía local y de la Embajada de Israel en Budapest. «Es un ejemplo de manual de la relativización del Holocausto. Es incompatible con la afirmación del gobierno de tolerancia cero para el antisemitismo», manifestó la comunidad.

En el artículo, Demeter, designado por el primer ministro húngaro Viktor Orbán para supervisar la producción cultural, escribió que Soros era «el Führer liberal, y su ejército libertario lo deifica más que al propio Hitler».

El gobierno de Orbán suele atacarlo por sus actividades filantrópicas en favor de causas liberales. Las campañas gubernamentales en los medios de comunicación dirigidas en su contra dieron lugar a acusaciones de antisemitismo.

Demeter se refirió a Polonia y Hungría, ambos bajo investigación de la UE por socavar la independencia judicial y la libertad de prensa, como «los nuevos judíos».

El gobierno de Israel, un aliado cercano de Hungría, condenó los dichos de Demeter y su comparación de George Soros con Adolf Hitler. La Embajada de Israel en Budapest respondió a través de su cuenta de Twitter: «¡Rechazamos por completo el uso y abuso de la memoria del Holocausto para cualquier propósito! No hay lugar para formular conexiones entre el peor crimen en la historia de la humanidad, o sus perpetradores, con ningún debate contemporáneo».

Gordon Bajnai, primer ministro de Hungría en 2009-2010, escribió en su cuenta de Facebook que si Demeter no es removido de su cargo, «los húngaros y el resto del mundo considerarán sus declaraciones como la posición del gobierno”.
