Se resolvió el misterio: las plantas «hablan». Por primera vez en la historia, investigadores de la Universidad de Tel Aviv registraron y analizaron sonidos claramente emitidos por plantas, similares a clics, que podrían compararse con los del estallido de palomitas de maíz.
Los sonidos se emiten a un volumen similar al de las personas, pero a altas frecuencias, más allá del rango auditivo del oído humano, indicó el reporte, publicado en la revista especializada Cell.
«Descubrimos que las plantas generalmente emiten sonidos cuando están bajo estrés, y que cada planta y cada tipo de estrés está asociado con un sonido identificable específico», señaló el informe.
Si bien son imperceptibles para el oído humano, añadieron, «los sonidos emitidos por las plantas probablemente pueden ser escuchados por varios tipos de animales como murciélagos, ratones e insectos».
De estudios previos se sabe que los vibrómetros conectados a las plantas registran, precisamente, vibraciones, recordó la profesora Lilach Hadany, de la Facultad de Ciencias Vegetales y Seguridad Alimentaria de la Universidad de Tel Aviv.
«Pero, ¿esas vibraciones también se convierten en ondas de sonido transportadas por el aire, es decir, sonidos que se pueden grabar a distancia? Nuestro estudio abordó esta pregunta, que los investigadores han estado debatiendo durante muchos años», apuntó Hadany.
Escuchando a las plantas de tomate y tabaco
En la primera etapa del estudio, los investigadores colocaron plantas en una caja acústica en un subsuelo tranquilo y aislado sin ruido de fondo.
Luego se instalaron micrófonos ultrasónicos que registran sonidos a frecuencias de 20 a 250 kilohercios (la frecuencia máxima detectada por un adulto humano es de unos 16 kilohercios) a una distancia de unos 10 centímetros de cada planta.
Según explicaron desde la universidad israelí, el estudio se centró principalmente en plantas de tomate y tabaco, pero también se registraron otras de trigo, maíz, nopal y henbit.
Hadany señaló que, antes de colocarlas en la caja acústica, las plantas pasaron por varios tratamientos. «Algunas no habían sido regadas durante cinco días, en otras se había cortado el tallo y otras estaban intactas», precisó.
«Nuestra intención era probar si las plantas emiten sonidos, y si estos sonidos se ven afectados de alguna manera por su condición de la planta -continuó la profesora-. Nuestras grabaciones indicaron que las plantas en nuestro experimento emitieron sonidos a frecuencias de 40-80 kilohercios».
Pero los hallazgos no terminaron ahí: las plantas sin estrés emitieron menos de un sonido por hora, en promedio, mientras que las las plantas estresadas, tanto deshidratadas como lesionadas, «emitían docenas de sonidos cada hora», reveló la académica.
Usando Inteligencia Artificial
Las grabaciones recopiladas por el equipo encabezado por Hadany y el profesor Yossi Yovel fueron analizadas por algoritmos de aprendizaje automático especialmente desarrollados para esta investigación.
A través de un proceso de Inteligencia Artificial, los algoritmos «aprendieron» a distinguir entre diferentes plantas y diferentes tipos de sonidos y finalmente pudieron identificar la planta y determinar el tipo y nivel de estrés de las grabaciones.
Además, los algoritmos identificaron y clasificaron los sonidos de las plantas incluso cuando fueron colocadas en un invernadero con mucho ruido de fondo.
En el invernadero los investigadores monitorearon plantas sometidas a un proceso de deshidratación a lo largo del tiempo y encontraron que la cantidad de sonidos que emitían aumentaba hasta cierto punto y luego disminuía.
«Resolvimos una controversia científica muy antigua: ¡probamos que las plantas sí emiten sonidos!», celebró la profesora Hadany.
¿Las pueden escuchar los murciélagos?
«Suponemos que, en la naturaleza, los sonidos emitidos por las plantas son detectados por criaturas cercanas, como murciélagos, roedores, varios insectos y posiblemente también otras plantas, que pueden escuchar las altas frecuencias y obtener información relevante», añadió.
Más aún, los investigadores que descubrieron que las plantas hablan apuntaron que también los humanos pueden utilizar esta información, con las herramientas adecuadas, como sensores que adviertan cuando estos vegetales necesiten riego, por ejemplo.
«Aparentemente, un idílico campo de flores puede ser un lugar bastante ruidoso. ¡Es solo que no podemos escuchar los sonidos!», completó Hadany. Aunque debería agregarle la oración: «hasta ahora».
