El fallecido príncipe Bernardo de Holanda, abuelo del actual rey del país, Guillermo Alejandro -marido de la reina Máxima Zorreguieta–, fue miembro del partido nazi en Países Bajos, según reveló una nueva investigación casi dos décadas después de su muerte.
En su libro The Behind, que se publicó este miércoles, Flip Maarschalkerweerd revela que ha encontrado el carnet original de miembro del partido nacionalsocialista (NSDAP) del príncipe. Maarschalkerweerd fue director del archivo y descubrió el carnet en los papeles privados del príncipe de origen alemán.
Bernardo, padre de la reina madre Beatriz, siempre negó haber pertenecido al NSDAP de Adolf Hitler y se presentó como un supremo luchador de la resistencia, a pesar de las acusaciones de que simpatizaba con los nazis.
El historiador señaló que el carnet de afiliado es ahora una prueba clara de que era miembro del partido, pero sigue siendo un misterio por qué Bernardo no lo destruyó.
Una vieja polémica
Incluso poco antes de su muerte, el príncipe declaró en una serie de entrevistas al diario De Volkskrant que podía “declarar con la mano en la Biblia” que nunca había sido nazi. “Nunca pagué cuotas de afiliación, nunca tuve un carnet de afiliado”.
Las acusaciones sostenían que Bernardo había pactado con Hitler asumir el reinado de Holanda, bajo el poder político alemán. El príncipe negó también que su madre haya favorecido al nazismo y recordó que las fuerzas de las SS la “arrancaron” de su casa en 1944.
La casa real decía entonces que Bernardo, para terminar sus estudios en Alemania, tuvo que integrarse al partido de Hitler contra su propia voluntad. En 1995, otros estudiosos descubrieron nuevos documentos que demostraban que Bernardo continuó pagando la cuota del partido nazi por lo menos hasta el año de su casamiento con la reina Juliana, en 1937.
En 1996, unos historiadores encontraron una copia del carnet de afiliación en Nueva York, pero Bernardo declaró que era falsa, si bien admitió que había pertenecido a una unidad especial de las SS durante su estancia en Alemania.
