Los rabinos principales sefardí y ashkenazí, Yitzhak Yosef y David Lau, se reunieron este jueves con el rabino principal de la comunidad etíope y los jefes de la comunidad etíope en Israel para abordar el asesinato del joven Solomon Teka a manos de un policía fuera de servicio.
Los rabinos afirmaron que los miembros de la comunidad etíope tienen derecho a manifestarse y que la discriminación contra la comunidad no debe dejarse de lado, según reportó el periódico The Jerusalem Post.
Desde el día lunes, las protestas convocadas a lo largo de Israel por el asesinato de Teka, que se desarrollaron con bloqueos de cruces principales, desencadenaron en algunos puntos en disturbios violentos, con el martes como la jornada más intensa, en los que decenas de manifestantes resultaron detenidos y más de 100 policías resultaron heridos.
Los rabinos exhortaron a la Policía de Israel a que muestre moderación y permita que los manifestantes ejerzan su derecho a la libre expresión.
A cambio de trabajar para calmar las tensiones que rodean a las fuerzas policiales, los rabinos solicitaron a los jefes de la comunidad que prometieran llamar a los manifestantes para que cesen la violencia y se manifiesten de manera legal.
“Pedimos a los miembros de la comunidad etíope que celebren sus manifestaciones pacíficamente, así como a las fuerzas policiales para que muestren moderación hacia los manifestantes adoloridos [por la muerte de Teka]”, comentó el rabino Yosef al final de la reunión.
El rabino Lau se unió a los comentarios de Yosef y agregó que “Todos somos hermanos y la manera correcta de resolver los problemas es en la conversación mientras se mantiene el respeto mutuo”.
