Este jueves, a sus 98 años, falleció el virtuoso violinista israelí Ivry Gitlis, quien se encontraba internado en París, Francia. Fue uno de los exponentes de la música clásica y actuó con las mejores orquestas del mundo.
Gitlis, de gran carisma, nunca dejó de experimentar, se sentía cómodo tocando con los Rolling Stones, el jazzman Stephane Grapelli, narradores africanos y músicos romaníes. Siempre estaba en la búsqueda de algo nuevo. Jamás se quedaba en su zona de confort musical.

De cabello blanco despeinado y penetrantes ojos azules, el maestro tenía fama de ser caprichoso, salvaje y narcisista, tocar con los ojos cerrados y, a menudo, improvisar en lugar de usar partituras. En 1955, fue el primer artista israelí en actuar en la Unión Soviética. También, fue un firme defensor del proceso de paz israelí-palestino y embajador de buena voluntad de la UNESCO, organización cultural de las Naciones Unidas.

De padres judíos, nació un 25 de agosto de 1922, en Haifa. Cuando tenía tan sólo cinco años, le compraron su primer violín y, a pesar de su corta edad, comenzó a incursionar en la música. «Llegó mi cumpleaños y pedí un violín, aunque era tan pequeño que ni siquiera podía tocarlo. Pero estaba decidido», contó años después Gitlis.

Cuando tenía 9 años, conoció a Bronislaw Huberman, el fundador de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Israel, quien quedó impresionado con el niño y reunió dinero para que viajara a Francia. A los 11, Gitlis ingresó al Conservatorio de París y dos años más tarde ganó el máximo premio de la prestigiosa institución. Cuando estalló la Segunda Guerra Mundial, huyó a Londres, con la esperanza de unirse a la Real Fuerza Aérea de Gran Bretaña, pero terminó trabajando en campamentos militares, hospitales y fábricas de municiones.
