Expertos de la Asociación Pediátrica alertaron sobre «preocupante crecimiento» de los casos de coronavirus infantil en Israel en los últimos meses.
En noviembre se habían registrado 400 casos de menores de dos años infectados y esta cifra se ha disparado ahora a los 5.800.
El profesor Ammon Zung, director de pediatría del Centro Médico Kaplan, declaró que «afortunadamente, la mayoría pasa la enfermedad de forma leve. De todas maneras, hemos visto algunos casos de fiebres muy altas y dificultad respiratoria. Eso nos obligó a ingresarlos en terapia intensiva».
Los judíos ultraortodoxos y los árabes israelíes son los que más hijos tienen en el país. Al mismo tiempo son las comunidades con índices de contagio más altos y «este es uno de los factores que explica este alto número de niños infectados». Así lo afirma el profesor Lev Leshem, del Sheba Medical Center (SMC); y agrega que «a lo que hay que sumar la fatiga general con el confinamiento», que hace que la gente no respete las normas.
Las autoridades han bajado hasta los 16 años la edad de vacunación y no descartan seguir bajándola. El doctor Boaz Lev, asesor del ministerio de Salud, declaró a la cadena BBC que para alcanzar la inmunidad de grupo hay que vacunar al 90 por ciento de la población y «eso no se puede lograr sin los niños». Pfizer ha comenzado las pruebas, pero aun no está claro cuándo será aprobado su uso con menores de 16 años.

Israel es líder mundial en vacunación, con más de 5 millones de dosis administradas, y el país vive un tercer encierro, pero los contagios no descienden y esto se debe, además del impacto de la cepa británica, a que importantes sectores de la población no respetan las restricciones.
Desde el ministerio de Salud se realizó un llamamiento a la población para acudir a los centros de vacunación ya que el ritmo se ha ralentizado en los últimos días. «No hay excusas, se tiene que vacunar todo el mundo», declaró el ministro de Salud, Yuli Edelstein. Además anunció la puesta en marcha de un certificado que permitirá a quienes se vacunen poder viajar a Israel sin tener que hacer cuarentena.
El primer ministro, Benjamín Netanyahu, realizó la misma petición a la población y recordó que «el objetivo más importante es vacunar a todos los mayores de 50 años cuanto antes para reabrir nuestra economía de forma responsable.
