El dinero les permite reclutar a cada vez más combatientes, que se calculan en 100.000. Los yihadistas, además, ya controlan 56.000 kilómetros cuadrados entre Irak y Siria e intentan expandirse a todo Medio Oriente.
El Estado Islámico (EI) es, en estos momentos, la organización terrorista más rica del mundo, ya que tiene más de 2.000 millones de dólares en el International Business Times, según afirman fuentes de ese mismo banco. Esa cantidad cuadriplica los fondos de los talibanes (u$s560 millones) o de Al Shabab (u$s100 millones).
De acuerdo con un reporte de Medium, los terroristas islámicos obtuvieron esa cantidad de dinero, en gran medida, por la venta de petróleo de los pozos que controla ilegalmente, algo que reportaría alrededor de u$s3 millones por día. La ocupación temporal de Mosul, la segunda ciudad de Irak y donde funciona una importante represa, también contribuyó a que acrecentaran su fortuna.
La rápida expansión del EI es algo que preocupa a los Estados Unidos, Europa y a distintos países de Medio Oriente. En un año de existencia, el grupo ya es más fuerte que Al Qaeda, a pesar de que comenzó siendo una filial de esta red terrorista.
El EI controla alrededor de 56.000 kilómetros cuadrados entre Irak y Siria, un área en la que viven unos seis millones de personas y en la que han declarado meses atrás su califato, que planean extender a Jordania, Israel, el Líbano y Turquía.
Por otro lado, recientes informaciones sugieren que la organización cuenta con 100.000 milicianos, la mayoría de ellos iraquíes y sirios, aunque también es preocupante el número de combatientes extranjeros, provenientes de los Estados Unidos, el Reino Unido, Francia, España y Marruecos.
Esta «prosperidad» ha permitido a los islamistas armarse con tecnología sofisticada, como el uso de drones para espiar a sus rivales. También tienen una fuerte presencia en redes sociales, como Twitter, y foros bélicos. En YouTube, suben videos de adoctrinamiento, de sus operativos y de sus ataques y homicidios.
Según la ONU, el EI regularmente comete crímenes de guerra y contra la humanidad en Siria, incluidas torturas, asesinatos y violaciones. Los días viernes, hacen ejecuciones públicas de hombres y niños acusados de colaborar con otros grupos y dan latigazos públicos a mujeres que no obedecen el código de vestimenta del grupo y «osan» salir a la calle con su pelo o su rostro al descubierto.
Los cuerpos de los ejecutados, muchas veces crucificados, se dejan a la vista del público durante tres días, como un método de aterrorizar a la población local. También se ha podido constatar que el grupo yihadista recluta y entrena militarmente a niños de hasta 10 años.
