Arqueólogos israelíes hallaron un exclusivo escondite de monedas de plata del período asmoneo, hace más de 2.000 años, durante la construcción de una carretera en la zona de Modiín, en el centro del país, informó la Autoridad de Antigüedades Israelí.
El hallazgo, formado por varios tipos de monedas de distintas dinastías, incluye dieciséis de un shekel (ciclo) y medio shekels acuñadas en la ciudad de Tiro, hoy en Líbano, con las exclusivas efigies de los reyes Antíoco VII y su hermano Demetrius II.
Abraham Tendler, director de las excavaciones, indicó que datan de hace más de 2.100 años y fueron halladas junto al muro de una hacienda agrícola de la época.
«El hallazgo (en su conjunto) demuestra que uno de los miembros de la hacienda que había ahorrado su dinero tuvo que abandonar su casa por alguna razón. Enterró el dinero con la esperanza de volver pero por lo visto no tuvo suerte y nunca regreso», afirmó.
Las monedas fueron descubiertas en abril durante la preparación de un terreno por el que pasará la carretera de un nuevo barrio en la zona de Modiín, de la que procedía la dinastía asmonea, que reinó en Judea entre el 140 a.C. y el 37 a.C.
Tzvi Ariel, jefe del Departamento de Monedas de la Dirección, explicó que el escondite contiene numerosas monedas de bronce de los reyes asmoneos (macabeos) -entre ellos Jehohanán, Judá, Jonatán y Matatías- y las exclusivas dieciséis de Tiro.
«Hay una o dos monedas acuñadas cada año entre el 135 y el 126 a.C. Puede ser que fuera un coleccionista. Actuó de la misma forma que lo hace hoy un coleccionista de monedas o sellos», destacó el experto sobre la inusual composición.
