Cuatro soldados resultaron heridos a raíz de una explosión que se produjo dentro del tanque en el que realizaban un ejercicio de entrenamiento de rutina en el sur de la Meseta del Golán.
Dos helicópteros militares evacuaron a los soldados, integrantes de la División 401 del Noveno Batallón, al hospital Rambam de Haifa. Dos de los soldados sufrieron graves heridas, un tercero resultó con heridas moderadas y el cuarto con lesiones leves a raíz de la inhalación del humo, precisó una fuente militar.
El tanque era un Merkava Mark IV. El comandante del pelotón del tanque se encuentra entre los heridos.
Un oficial de alto rango del Cuerpo de Blindados explicó que el personal del tanque realizando una maniobra de disparos cuando un proyectil se atascó en el cañón del tanque. Cuando el equipo trataba de extraer el proyectil; éste se rompió, desparramando la pólvora en el interior del tanque.
Qunice minutos más tarde, luego de limpiar la pólvora, el ejercicio continuó. La tripulación del tanque desarrolló otra parte del ejercicio usando una ametralladora pesada MAG en la torreta del tanque. Durante la maniobra la tripulación del tanque reemplazó el cañón de la ametralladora MAG, depositando el cañón caliente usado junto al contenedor que contenía la pólvora del proyectil roto.
El cañón caliente de la ametralladora y los restos de la pólvora del proyectil malogrado desataron aparentemente una explosión, señaló el oficial.
De acuerdo con una investigación preliminar no se encontraron signos de negligencia en las acciones de los soldados durante el incidente.
«Los soldados actuaron de acuerdo con los procedimientos del ejército», dijo el oficial. «Instintivamente, se coloca el cañón de la ametralladora en la caja del tanque, es un procedimiento estándar. Algunos detalles aún no están claros y están siendo objeto de la investigación», señaló.
El Ejército de Defensa de Israel (Tzáhal) inició una amplia indagación sobre el incidente.
