El presidente uruguayo, José «Pepe» Mujica fue otros de los presidentes latinoamericanos que calificó de «genocidio» la ofensiva de Israel en la Franja de Gaza. Antes la Embajada de ese país había tildado al gobierno israelí de cometer «crímenes de guerra».
El presidente de Uruguay hizo declaraciones a el diario El País y expresó: «Cuando se bombardean hospitales, niños y viejos me parece que es un «genocidio». En un momento de la entrevista fue consultado sobre sí Israel tiene derecho a defenderse y esto respondió: «Todos tienen derecho a defenderse, pero hay defensas que no se pueden hacer». Por último, Mujica señaló que está muy preocupado por el conflicto de Medio Oriente por que siempre se castiga al más débil».
