Las palabras y los símbolos si importan, excepto cuando no importan. [1]
Cuando se trata de cualquier tipo de radicalización o movilización, identificar la causa final puede ser difícil. Fue Sayyid Qutub y luego Muhammad Abd Al-Salam Faraj a finales de 1970, quienes promovieron la idea de que el yihad era una responsabilidad individual pertinente a todo musulmán en lugar de algo que un gobierno o gobernante establecido realiza. Abdulaziz se equivocó al entender que los Sahaba eran de alguna manera individuos que emprendían el yihad. Estos fueron los primeros musulmanes conversos miembros de un movimiento y luego líderes de un estado y para ellos y la mayor parte de la historia del Islam, el yihad fue declarado por gobernantes y estados que utilizaron la guerra santa como parte de su política estatal. Dos “palabras asesinas” más revividas por el EIIS son khilafa y jizya. Sueños de revivir el califato no son nada nuevo entre los islamistas, pero son parte esencial del proyecto del EIIS, el perfecto estado final a ser llevado a cabo y por el cual el yihad se va a librar. Incluso si el EIIS es destruido en los próximos años, estos han logrado revitalizar el concepto del Califato para las nuevas generaciones.

Irónicamente, el jizya, el impuesto con la intención de saquear y claramente humillar a los cristianos y a los judíos fue abolido en 1856 por el khalifa del día, el califa otomano Sultán Abdulmajid I. Pero el EIIS le ha dado un nuevo propósito a una horrible tradición islámica bien documentada donde los cristianos y los judíos bajo el Islam tienen tres opciones; convertirse, la muerte o el robo organizado y la discriminación personificada por el impuesto. Taghut es el espíritu de la tiranía idólatra que debe ser combatido y erradicado en su totalidad, de acuerdo a los yihadistas. Los regímenes anti-jihadistas en el mundo musulmán que deberían ser derrocados también son considerados taghut.

Estos términos altamente cargados y las poderosas y respetuosas construcciones ideológicas tras de ellos, tendrán que ser reconstruidas, reinventadas o demolidas por los propios musulmanes creadores de opinión. Voces musulmanas independientes e innovadoras ya lo están haciendo, tales como el conocido cinematógrafo Abdullah X quien habla en el idioma de la juventud musulmana del Reino Unido. [6] Y para los no musulmanes, ¿cómo podemos todos nosotros, en nuestra fracturada, hipersensible y fácilmente ofendida Occidente, encontrar un equilibrio, donde podemos diferenciar entre las palabras que hieren, el discurso impopular y ofensivo que es parte esencial de la protegida libertad de expresión y las palabras que matan?
