Tras haber desatado un escándalo al afirmar que Adolf Hitler en un principio apoyó al sionismo, el ex alcalde de Londres y alto dirigente del laborismo británico, Ken Livingstone , echó más leña al fuego con sus provocaciones, alegando que el primer ministro, Biniamín Netanyahu, defendería sus comentarios porque que ha dicho lo mismo.
En una entrevista ofrecida la emisora radial LBC, Livingstone rechazó pedir disculpas por afirmar que Hitler era sionista, diciendo que lamenta toda la agitación pero insiste en que lo que dijo es «la afirmación de un hecho».
«¿Cómo voy a herir y ofender a la comunidad judía cuando el primer ministro de Israel dijo exactamente lo mismo?», preguntó sin complejos Livingstone. Al parecer, se refería a los comentarios hechos por Netanyahu en octubre pasado sugiriendo que Hitler no había pensado inicialmente aniquilar a los judíos, sino solamente expulsarlos de Europa, y que la idea del exterminio vino del entonces Gran Muftí de Jerusalén, Haj Amin al Husseini, el líder de los palestinos, conocido ampliamente como un ferviente enemigo de los judíos y colaborador del nazismo.
Netanyahu se retractó de sus controversiales comentarios en ese mismo momento, bajo el telón de fondo de fuertes críticas en Israel y en el extranjero.
«Si el primer ministro de Israel puede decir, dos días antes, exactamente lo que dije, eso no puede significar que soy antisemita – y ciertamente no soy antisemita», alegó Livingstone, ofreciendo un tiempo incorrecto de las declaraciones de Netanyahu e implicando falsamente que el primer ministro había sugerido que Hitler apoyó el sionismo.
Livingstone manifestó que va a «invitar al primer ministro de Israel a que venga a defenderme, ya que él está claramente de acuerdo con lo que dije».
El líder del laborismo israelí, Isaac Herzog respondió furiosamente a las declaraciones hechas por Livingstone y otros miembros del Partido Laborista Británico. Herzog invitó a los cabecillas del laborismo británico a que visiten el Museo del Holocausto-Yad Vashem en Jerusalén como un recordatorio de los resultados de antisemitismo. Herzog expresó que las declaraciones de Livingstone son «repulsivas» y también condenó a la «colega antisemita» de Livingstone, la diputada Naz Shah, quien también fue suspendida.

Un destacado historiador británico rechazó de plano las afirmaciones de Livingstone, calificándolas de ignorantes e «históricamente analfabetas».
El historiador Roger Moorhouse desestimó las afirmaciones de Livingstone. «Hitler era un antisemita. Era un arraigado y apasionado antisemita. El antisemitismo era el principio rector de su vida política y lo fue durante toda su carrera», escribió Moorhouse.
Moorhouse reconoció un acuerdo en 1933 entre los nuevos gobernantes nazis de Alemania y sionistas judíos alemanes para permitir la emigración al Mandato Británico en Palestina para quienes lo desearan, en tanto que Hitler trataba de librarse de judíos del país de cualquier forma que pudiera. Añadió que el sionismo era apenas apoyado por los judíos de Alemania, y fue simplemente «una corriente particular del pensamiento político judío». Decir que Hitler apoyó el sionismo «no sólo es históricamente inexacto, es históricamente analfabeto», escribió Moorhouse.
Su colega, el historiador Andrew Roberts apuntó que: «La idea de que Hitler siempre quiso un estado judío funcionando con pleno éxito en Palestina -el sueño de los sionistas- es absurdo, y el señor Livingstone lo sabe sin lugar a dudas. La única razón de Ken Livingstone para mencionar al Führer en su entrevista era ser tan cruel y repugnante como le sea posible para los oyentes judíos, en lugar de intentar de ofrecer una perspectiva histórica válida acerca de las supuestas políticas migratorias del Tercer Reich en la década de 1930».
