Irlanda evalúa reconocer un «Estado Palestino»

Irlanda podría reconocer a un Estado palestino si las conversaciones de paz con Israel destinadas a producir una solución de dos Estados en la región continúan estancadas. Así lo afirmó el ministro de Relaciones Exteriores del país, Simon Coveney.

Los comentarios de Coveney se produjeron durante una conferencia de prensa conjunta el fin de semana con el ministro de Asuntos Exteriores de la Autoridad Palestina (AP), Riyad Al-Maliki, según informó The Irish Times.

El ministro de Relaciones Exteriores expresó que Irlanda ya se ha comprometido a reconocer un Estado palestino como parte de un proceso de paz. Sin embargo, si las negociaciones entre los lados siguen siendo infructuosas “es posible que tengamos que olvidarnos de la segunda parte de eso”, agregó.

A su vez, especuló y abrió la posibilidad de que otros países europeos tomarían una posición similar. La voluntad de Coveney de reconocer a un Estado palestino si las conversaciones siguen fallando va un paso más allá del compromiso de Fine Gael en el reconocimiento como parte de un proceso de paz.

“Hemos tomado la decisión de no reconocer oficialmente el Estado de Palestina por el momento“, dijo el Ministro. “Pero si esta desesperanza continúa en términos del diálogo de trabajo, nos veremos obligados a revisar eso por razones obvias, ya que creo que también lo harán muchos otros países en Europa”.

En 2014, los legisladores irlandeses aprobaron una moción simbólica no vinculante instando a su gobierno a reconocer a Palestina como un Estado. La AP dice que hay 139 países que la han reconocido, pero son simbólicos y tienen poco o ningún efecto diplomático real.

El presidente de la AP, Mahmoud Abbas, ha estado tratando de eludir los esfuerzos de Estados Unidos para negociar la paz con Israel al convencer a otros países para que reconozcan a “Palestina“.
