Israel organizará un proyecto de simulación internacional del planeta Marte en octubre de 2020, anunció la Agencia Espacial de Israel del Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología de Israel y el Foro Espacial Austriaco (OeWF).
La simulación se realizará cerca del poblado de Mitzpe Ramon en el desierto de Negev, sur de Israel, e involucrará a seis 6 astronautas, uno de los cuales es israelí.
El evento se llevará a cabo como parte del programa de investigación «AMADEE» del Foro Espacial Austriaco.
El objetivo del programa es desarrollar equipo, flujos de trabajo y ciencia hacia futuras misiones de superficie planetaria humano-robóticas.
Una nueva misión de campo se establece cada dos o tres años dentro del marco del programa, y se elige a un país como sede. En 2018, la misión se realizó en Omán.
De acuerdo con el comunicado israelí-austriaco, el área Mitzpe Ramon es similar a Marte, lo que permitirá la exploración de varios aspectos del planeta en un ambiente auténtico.
Un domo geodésico será construido en el área, simulando una residencia astronauta con sistemas de apoyo de vida, una estación de investigación, antenas y fuentes de energía solar.
Los astronautas estarán aislados del mundo durante tres semanas, y se trasladarán alrededor en trajes espaciales sobre vehículos de exploración espacial y realizando investigación científica.
El ministro de Ciencia de Israel, Ofir Akunis, dijo que la simulación tendrá un valor científico y hasta un valor turístico por los paisajes imponentes de Israel, y añadió que «hará avanzar nuestra gloriosa industria espacial».
