El suplemento Sunday Review del New York Times publicó en su portada uno de los artículos más sesgados, tendenciosos, históricamente incorrectos, ignorantes y prejuiciosos que haya publicado jamás ese venerable periódico. Escrito por Michele Alexander, se titulaba: «Es hora de romper el silencio sobre Palestina», como si la cuestión palestina no hubiese sido la más sobredimensionada en los campus, en Naciones Unidas y en los medios. No hay ningún silencio que romper. Lo que se debe romper son los prejuicios de los que ponen las quejas de los palestinos por encima de las de los kurdos, los sirios, los iraníes, los chechenos, los tibetanos, los ucranianos y muchos otros grupos dignos de atención que sufren de verdad el silencio de la academia, los medios y la comunidad internacional. Naciones Unidas dedica más recursos –tiempo, dinero y votos– a la cuestión palestina que a las reivindicaciones de todos los demás grupos oprimidos en conjunto. Algunos de estos otros grupos no pueden ni siquiera lograr una audiencia en Naciones Unidas.
El sufrimiento de los palestinos, que no se puede comparar al sufrimiento de los otros grupos, ha sido en gran medida autoinfligido. Podrían haber tenido un Estado, sin ocupación, si hubiesen aceptado el Informe de la Comisión Peel de 1937, el Plan de Partición de Naciones Unidas de 1947, la oferta de Clinton y Barak de 2000–2001 y la oferta de Ehud Olmert de 2008. Rechazaron todas estas ofertas –y respondieron con violencia y terrorismo– porque les habría exigido aceptar a Israel como la nación-Estado del pueblo judío, algo que no están dispuestos a hacer ni siquiera hoy. Lo sé, porque le he hecho esa pregunta directamente al presidente Mahmud Abás, y dijo que no. Los líderes palestinos siempre han querido que no hubiese un Estado judío más de lo que querían ser un Estado palestino.
La cuestión palestina no es «uno de los grandes desafíos morales de nuestro tiempo», como insiste el artículo. Es un problema complejo, con matices y pragmático del que todas las partes tienen responsabilidad. Se podría resolver, si los líderes palestinos estuviesen dispuestos a aceptar las «dolorosas concesiones» que los líderes israelíes ya han dicho que aceptarían. Si los primeros líderes palestinos –que colaboraron con Hitler– no hubiesen atacado, junto a los países árabes de alrededor, a Israel en cuanto se declaró su estatidad, habría sido un Estado viable. Si Hamás hubiese utilizado los recursos que recibió cuando Israel puso fin a su ocupación de la Franja de Gaza en 2005 para construir escuelas, hospitales e industria, en lugar de utilizar esos recursos para construir lanzaderas de cohetes y túneles terroristas, se podría haber convertido en la «Singapur del mar», en lugar del enclave asolado por la pobreza en que lo han convertido sus gobernantes. Los líderes palestinos –Hamás y también la Autoridad Palestina– tienen al menos tanta responsabilidad del sufrimiento de los palestinos como los israelíes.
Israel tiene también su parte de culpa, pero el enfoque de Alexander, que le atribuye toda la culpa a Israel, va contra la historia y es prejuicioso. Un ejemplo de los sesgos de la autora es su absurda afirmación de que «muchos estudiantes temen expresar su apoyo a los derechos palestinos» por las «tácticas macartistas» empleadas por las organizaciones proisraelíes. ¿Ha estado Alexander alguna vez en un campus, en realidad? En fin: yo he dado clases y conferencias en cientos de campus, y puedo atestiguar que no hay ninguna causa internacional que reciba más atención –mucha más de lo que merece, en comparación con otras causas más acuciantes– que los palestinos. Son los estudiantes proisraelíes los que son silenciados por temor a bajar de categoría, a que se les nieguen recomendaciones y los eviten sus compañeros. Se ha intentado impedirme que hablara en varios campus, a pesar de que yo defiendo una solución de dos Estados para el conflicto.
Alexander dice que hay una discriminación jurídica contra los israelíes árabes. La realidad es que los israelíes árabes tienen más derechos que los árabes en cualquier lugar del mundo musulmán. Votan libremente, tienen sus propios partidos políticos, hablan abiertamente contra el Gobierno israelí y se benefician de la discriminación positiva en las universidades israelíes. El único derecho del que carecen es el de convertir Israel en otro Estado musulmán gobernado por la ley de la sharía, en lugar de la nación-Estado del pueblo judío gobernado por la ley democrática secular. Eso es lo que la nueva ley del Estado-nación hace cuando niega a los árabes «el derecho a la autodeterminación en Israel».
Alexander condena que se estén «demoliendo las casas palestinas» sin mencionar que esas son casas de terroristas que asesinan a bebés judíos, mujeres y hombres. Se lamenta de los muertos en Gaza –a la que se refiere como territorio «ocupado», a pesar de que se marcharon todos los soldados y colonos israelíes en 2005– sin mencionar que muchos de esos muertos eran escudos humanos y que desde detrás de ellos los terroristas de Hamás lanzan cohetes a los civiles israelíes. Dice que hay «calles sólo para los judíos», que es una rotunda mentira. Dice que hay carreteras en los territorios disputados que están restringidas para los coches con matrícula israelí, pero es por motivos de seguridad. Pero esas carreteras están abiertas a todos los israelíes, incluidos los musulmanes, los drusos, los cristianos, los zoroastras y las personas sin confesión religiosa. Pero como Martin Luther King, Jr. nos recordó, cuando repites una mentira con la suficiente frecuencia, la gente la cree.
El aspecto más indignante de la larga diatriba de Alexander es que diga que se inspiró en Martin Luther King para escribirlo. Martin Luther King era un firme sionista, que dijo célebremente: «Cuando la gente critica a los sionistas, se refieren a los judíos. Son palabras antisemitas».
