António Moreira Antunes, el ilustrador portugués autor de una reciente caricatura antisemita publicada en el periódico The New York Times, negó que su obra tenga tal carácter.
Su obra, que muestra al primer ministro de Israel Benjamin Netanyahu como un perro con un collar con la Estrella de David, y al presidente de Estados Unidos Donald Trump ciego y con una kipá guiado por aquel, fue publicada en la edición internacional del diario norteamericano el pasado jueves, generando inmediatamente una fuerte controversia.
En medio de críticas, al principio, el prestigioso periódico eliminó la caricatura de su sitio web de sindicación alegando que era ofensivo y que era un “error de juicio” haberlo publicado. Más tarde ofreció una disculpa completa, diciendo que estaba “profundamente apenado”, que se había tratado del error de un editor, y aseguró que se comprometerían a que no volviera a ocurrir algo así.
A pesar de las disculpas, otra caricatura contra Netanyahu, vista por algunos de igual manera como antisemita, fue publicada en la edición internacional de los días 27 y 28 de abril.
“La política errática, destructiva y a menudo ciega de Trump alentó el radicalismo expansionista de Netanyahu”, expresó Antunes al periódico israelí The Jerusalem Post.
Antunes pareció referirse a las recientes sugerencias hechas por Netanyahu sobre extender la soberanía del Estado de Israel en los asentamientos en Cisjordania, entendido por algunos como un intento de anexión de los territorios palestinos, a los que internacionalmente se les considera “ocupados” por el Estado judío.
La declaración del premier vino poco después de que Trump reconociera la soberanía de Israel sobre los Altos del Golán, medida igualmente rechazada a nivel internacional debido a que desde 1967 se le considera, como a Cisjordania, igualmente territorio “ocupado” por Israel, pese a que este lo anexó vía doméstica a su territorio en 1981.
“Para ilustrar esta situación, se me ocurrió una analogía con un ciego (Trump) liderado por un perro guía (Netanyahu) y, para ayudarlo a identificarlo, poco conocido en Portugal, agregué la Estrella de David, símbolo del Estado de Israel y elemento central de su bandera”, aseguró el portugués.
Antunes no intentó explicar por qué dibujó una kipá en la cabeza de Trump. Tampoco respondió a una pregunta sobre las reacciones de The New York Times o sobre el periódico en el que trabaja.
“No busco controversia. Intento hacer caricaturas críticas de situaciones que me parecen incorrectas, injustas y antidemocráticas. Ya he hecho dibujos sobre la política de mi país, España, Francia, Rusia, Italia, Irán, China, Arabia Saudita, Estados Unidos, Brasil, Reino Unido, Corea del Norte, etc.”, explicó.
“¿Cuál sería la razón por la que no puedo hacer una crítica de la política israelí sin que sea categorizada inmediatamente como antisemita?”, cuestionó. “No tengo nada en contra de los judíos, pero tengo muchas cosas en contra de la política de Israel”.
El propio The New York Times calificó la caricatura como antisemita, al igual que la Liga Antidifamación, el Comité Judío Americano y varias figuras políticas de EE.UU., como el propio Trump y el vicepresidente norteamericano Mike Pence.
No es la primera vez que Antunes provoca polémica con uno de sus cartones hechos alrededor de Israel. En 1983, en medio de la Segunda Guerra del Líbano y con la conmoción internacional provocada por la llamada masacre de Sabra y Shatila, publicó un cartón en el que criticaba a Israel tomando de base una conocida fotografía del Holocausto: “Sacados con violencia de los búnkers”, como reza su título original en alemán, o mejor conocida como “El niño del Gueto de Varsovia”. El retoque hecho por Antunes a la imagen tomada durante el levantamiento del Gueto de Varsovia en abril de 1943, muestra al grupo de judíos con kefiyes sobre las cabezas, dándoles un carácter de palestinos o libaneses, en tanto que los soldados nazis aparecen con el rostro modificado y una Estrella de David en sus cascos, identificándolos así como soldados israelíes.

El Sr. MOREIRA ANTUNEZ dice no tener nada en contra de los judíos pero estar en desacuerdo con las políticas del gobierno de Israel, el estado-nación con 80% de su población judía… su hipocresía se cae por peso propio.
No dice estar siquiera contra el Estado de Israel (lo cual tampoco sería anti-Semita – hay judíos ortodoxos que están en contra del Estado), sino del actual Gobierno de Israel, por sus posturas políticas y militares.
