Assaf Yasur, un joven de 17 años que no tiene manos, calificó a los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020 y planea volver a casa con una medalla.
Assaf tenía sólo 13 años cuando perdió ambas manos por electrocución. “Estaba jugando fútbol con mis amigos cuando la pelota cayó en la estructura de la compañía eléctrica. Logré sacar la pelota de ahí y se la devolví los chicos, pero luego perdí el equilibrio y me agarré de un cable de tensión”, relata.
“Debo competir contra personas más pesadas y seis años mayores que yo en los Juegos Olímpicos. Todos competimos entre nosotros. Competir con personas con menor grado de discapacidad, es como tomar un examen sin haber estudiado”, afirma.
Assaf explica que en Taekwondo, las manos se usan en movimientos defensivos, por lo que “uso las manos que me quedan”.
Después de tres años de entrenamiento, Assaf ya participa en campeonatos internacionales. Recientemente, ganó una medalla de plata en el Campeonato Panamericano de Portland, Oregon. Actualmente ocupa el décimo lugar en su categoría a nivel mundial.
El chico vive en un apartamento alquilado a casi tres horas en automóvil de su casa en los Altos del Golán, para poder entrenar. “Me encanta vivir solo. La mayoría de los jóvenes de mi edad esperan irse de casa y lo hice un poco antes”.
Sus padres asumieron el alto costo de su entrenamiento y esperan encontrar patrocinadores para seguir manteniendo a su hijo en la cima, pero Lior dice: “Si tenemos que hacerlo, pediremos préstamos. Haremos lo que sea necesario para que Assaf cumpla su sueño”.
