Calmeyer era un abogado alemán que, a partir de marzo de 1941, fue asignado para juzgar casos en los que el estado judío de una persona estaba en duda. Él argumentó con éxito a sus superiores que a los individuos se les debería permitir desafiar su condición judía si sus abuelos no podían ser probados como judíos. Durante su mandato, Calmeyer supervisó 5.600 de tales peticiones y se le atribuye haber salvado miles de vidas judías.
