Fue un procedimiento que atravesó fronteras: una donante israelí donó un riñón que se envió a la República Checa, y una donante checa donó simultáneamente un riñón que se implantó en Israel. Eso supuso un procedimiento de seis donaciones de órganos: tres en Israel y otras tantas en la República Checa.
El complejo procedimiento de trasplantes e implantes se llevó a cabo gracias a un acuerdo de cooperación entre los Ministerios de Salud y de Relaciones Exteriores, que firmaron ambos países en agosto pasado. El acuerdo permitió llevar a cabo trasplantes e implantes de riñón cruzados entre dos miembros de la misma familia entre las cuales no había compatibilidad.
En octubre se hizo una exploración computarizada de rutina a fin de encontrar donaciones entre donantes y pacientes de ambos países. El escaneo mostró que había compatibilidad entre una paciente israelí y una paciente checa. El procedimiento, el primero de ese tipo en el mundo, se llevó a cabo el martes pasado: a las 5 de la madrugada se extrajeron dos riñones de dos donantes en el Hospital Beilinson de Tel Aviv. Uno de los riñones fue empaquetado en una hielera, que se llevó en una ambulancia al Aeropuerto de Ben Gurión. Luego de cumplir rápidamente con los trámites necesarios, se subió el riñón a un avión privado, en el que también viajaba la directora del Centro de Trasplantes de Israel, la doctora Tamar Ashkenazi.
Alrededor de una hora después de que el avión despegara de Israel, comenzó en el Hospital de Praga una operación quirúrgica para extraerle el riñón a una donante checa. Al mismo tiempo se implantó en el Hospital Beilinson un segundo riñón que se había extraído, y comenzó en el Hospital Hadasa de Jerusalem la operación quirúrgica para extraer un riñón, que se trasladó en ambulancia para ser implantado en el Beilinson.
A las 12:30, la hielera con el riñón proveniente de Israel aterrizó en el Aeropuerto de Praga. Un vehículo esperaba junto al avión, y lo llevó a la zona de control. En ese punto se encontraron el doctor Jerry Proniak, director del Programa de Trasplantes de Praga, y la doctora Ashkenazi de Israel, e intercambiaron documentos.
Al mismo tiempo, el riñón del Hospital Hadasa se llevó al Beilinson para ser implantado. Una hora después, el avión israelí despegó de Praga de regreso a Israel y en él había una hielera con el riñón de la donante checa. El riñón llegó al quirófano del Hospital Hadasa, y al caer la tarde se implantó en un paciente.
