Conocida por descubrir evidencia de materia oscura, esta científica pionera murió en 2016 a la edad de 88 años. Sin embargo, sigue rompiendo barreras, póstumamente: la Fundación Nacional de la Ciencia anunció esta semana que el primer observatorio nacional estadounidense que lleve el nombre de una mujer honrará a la científica judía.
A partir de 2022, el Observatorio Vera C. Rubin, anteriormente conocido como el Gran Telescopio de Reconocimiento Sinóptico, centrará sus esfuerzos en el estudio del sistema solar, la vía láctea y el legado de Rubin, la materia oscura. La instalación está ubicada en Chile.
Rubin fue una pionera para las mujeres científicas, y su legado continúa cerrando la brecha de género en el campo de la astronomía.
