El sistema de gobierno en Israel consiste en un voto parlamentario. Los ciudadanos votan por un partido y los ganadores necesitan tener suficientes escaños en el Congreso para formar gobierno o buscar una coalición con otro partido. Ni el primer ministro en funciones, Benjamín Netanyahu, del partido Likud,ni Benny Gantz ,del partido Azul y Blanco, han logrado eso y las proyecciones a boca de urna de las elecciones de este lunes indican que el camino está abonado para una cuartas elecciones.
Aunque en una decisión marcada aún por la incertidumbre, el presidente de Israel, Reuven Rivlin, ha confirmado este lunes que encomienda al líder centrista, Benny Gantz, la formación de un Gobierno de coalición tras las elecciones legislativas celebradas el pasado día 2. El futuro de Israel es incierto. Gantz, de 60 años, fue el jefe del Ejército que dirigió la guerra de Gaza en 2014. Tras irrumpir en política hace un año, el exgeneral ha conseguido congregar a la oposición en la Kneset (Parlamento) con ajustada mayoría para poner fin a la era de Benjamín Netanyahu, de 70 años, en el poder. El candidato designado ha anunciado durante una ceremonia en el palacio presidencial que intentará con todas sus fuerzas “establecer dentro de pocos días un Gabinete [de concentración] tan amplio y patriótico como sea posible”.

Esta mayoría teórica de 61 de los 120 escaños del Parlamento parece garantizar la investidura al exgeneral, pero los movimientos de al menos tres diputados que amenazan con rebelarse ponen en peligro la operación de alternancia. Dos diputados del ala más conservadora de Azul y Blanco, Zvi Hauser y Yoaz Hendel, se han opuesto a la formación de un Gobierno con el apoyo externo de la Lista Conjunta de partidos árabes.
La parlamentaria centrista Orly Levi-Abecassis, integrada en la candidatura de laboristas y pacifistas, ya ha confirmado que votará en contra de la investidura de Gantz si está respaldada por diputados árabes. La pérdida de estos tres escaños puede arruinar la estrategia del exgeneral, al privarle de la ventaja sobre Netanyahu.
