La inteligencia artificial llega a las playas de Israel para evitar muertes. En un país con avanzadas tecnologías de visión por computadora -como Mobileye-, ¿por qué los socorristas deben confiar en sus ojos o en los catalejos para mantener a salvo a los bañistas?
El verano pasado los amigos Adam Bismut y Netanel Eliav disfrutaban de un día de playa en Israel.
Mientras, observaban a un guardavidas que miraba hacia el mar Mediterráneo con unos binoculares.
Se miraron incrédulos.
Un año después de ese momento de contemplación, los amigos ya pueden decir que su solución de inteligencia artificial y reconocimiento de imágenes está lista para revolucionar el rescate en las playas.
Es que Sightbit les brinda a los bañeros una imagen actual de las ubicaciones de los nadadores y datos en tiempo real sobre cambios de vientos, olas y posibles peligros.
«Son características y precisión», explicó Minna Shezaf, cofundadora de la compañía.

«Advertimos sobre peligros cuando los nadadores se encuentran amenazados de forma potencial como en aguas profundas u otras situaciones de riesgo», agregó.
«Como cuando los niños están solos en el agua y cuando los bañistas entran en zonas definidas como peligrosas del tipo de un muelle o una escollera de rocas», detalló.
Sightbit también ofrece soluciones de gestión de multitudes.
También actualizaciones sobre las condiciones climáticas y estimaciones de cuántos socorristas se necesitan en un día determinado, informa Israel21C.
El 20 de mayo, Sightbit empezó un programa piloto a gran escala en la popular playa de Palmajim en el centro del país.

Contó con la colaboración de la Autoridad de Parques Nacionales de Israel (INPA).
«Hay sistemas de salvataje en piscinas que usan inteligencia artificial. Y han recibido excelentes críticas», contó la directiva.
«Pero se necesita una tecnología más compleja para mantener a los bañistas seguros en la playa», aseguró.
«Por lo general, hay muchas más personas -un promedio de 10.000 por día en temporada alta en Palmajim-, además de las condiciones del viento y el clima, como las corrientes, una de las principales causas de rescate en el mar», enfatizó.
La misión de la empresa es salvar vidas.
El ahogamiento es la tercera causa principal de muerte accidental en todo el mundo.
«Todos nos identificamos muy fuerte con esta necesidad de salud pública», manifestó Shezaf.
Eso incluye a sus otros tres cofundadores: Bismut, Eliav y Gadi Kovler, todos graduados de la Universidad Ben-Gurion.
La compañía tiene sus instalaciones en la ciudad sureña de Beersheva, una ciudad que, irónicamente, está lejos del mar una playa.
Shezaf afirmó que los empresarios están al tanto de varias otras startups que trabajan en tecnologías similares para los guardavidas pero que hasta ahora ninguna ha sido implementada.
La etapa de desarrollo del proyecto Sightbit implicó la creación de nuevas características tecnológicas y la adaptación de la capacidad existente de identificación de personas para un entorno oceánico.
«Esto comenzó como un proyecto de tiempo parcial y ahora se ha convertido en toda nuestra vida», finalizó la emprendedora.
