El ministro israelí de Defensa, Benny Gantz anunció hoy que Israel probará una vacuna contra el COVID-19 en humanos a partir de octubre
El Instituto de Israel para la Investigación Biotecnológica, dependiente del Ministerio de Defensa, iniciará los test con seres humanos en unos dos meses. Lo que podría suponer la fase final para elaborar un potencial antídoto contra el coronavirus.
«El producto está a mano», dijo Shmuel Shapira, director general del instituto. Trabaja desde hace meses en el desarrollo de la vacuna. La misma aún debe pasar procedimientos regulatorios y los ensayos en humanos, pero aseguró que se va por el buen camino.

El pasado junio el centro probó con éxito la vacuna en roedores. Esta es una etapa preliminar clave para su desarrollo que puede seguir con otros animales y, por último, pasar a la experimentación con humanos. Un paso final para comprobar la efectividad y posibles efectos secundarios de la vacunación.
El instituto, igual que otros centros científicos israelíes y de todo el mundo, trabaja contrarreloj para hallar algún antídoto contra la COVID-19 desde el inicio de la pandemia.
En mayo, consiguió desarrollar anticuerpos que neutralizan el virus, y que podrían servir para acelerar la creación de fármacos.
Todo ello se produce mientras Israel sigue en una fuerte segunda ola de coronavirus y en una situación económica frágil, lo que ha hecho crecer el malestar popular contra la gestión gubernamental.
