Y con el envión de su buen rendimiento ante Rafa, el argentino apareció en los momentos claves del partido y se llevó el triunfo por 6-4, 5-7 y 7-6 (4) en un final electrizante, palo a palo, para acceder por primera vez en su carrera a la final de un Masters 1000. Motivado por el triunfazo ante Nadal, Schwartzman salió al court central del Foro Itálico con el objetivo de imponer las condiciones del partido ante el zurdo Shapovalov. Y se adueñó del primer set por 6-4 con un sólido juego desde el fondo, tomando la iniciativa y neutralizando la buena derecha de su rival.
Sin embargo, el canadiense comenzó a ser más incisivo con sus tiros profundos en el segundo set y el Peque mostró algunas fallas. Su rival aumentó el porcentaje de tiros ganadores y se terminó llevando el set por 7-5.

El tercero y definitorio fue palo y palo. Casi siempre un punto abajo en el marcador, el tenista argentino siguió peleando, nunca se fue del partido y reaccionó en el tramo final para llevar la definición del set y del partido al tie break.
