El Príncipe Carlos, de Gran Bretaña, lamentó el fallecimiento del rabino Jonathan Sacks, quien murió de cáncer a la edad de 72 años.

En un comunicado oficial, el Príncipe lo catalogó como “un líder cuya sabiduría, erudición y humanidad no tenían igual”.

“Fue con el dolor personal más profundo que supe de la muerte del rabino Jonathan Sacks”, decía el comunicado. “Con su fallecimiento, la comunidad judía, nuestra nación y el mundo entero perdieron a un líder cuya sabiduría, erudición y humanidad no tenían igual. Su inmenso aprendizaje abarcaba lo sagrado y lo secular, y su voz profética habló sobre nuestros mayores desafíos con una perspicacia inquebrantable y una compasión ilimitada. Su sabio consejo fue buscado y apreciado por personas de todas las religiones y ninguna, y lo extrañaremos más de lo que las palabras pueden decir”.

El príncipe Carlos también agradeció al difunto rabino por el impacto positivo que tuvo en la vida de muchas personas.

“Aunque la muerte del rabino Lord Sacks es la causa de la mayor tristeza posible, damos gracias por la contribución inconmensurable que, en la tradición de los maestros más venerados del pueblo judío, hizo a todas nuestras vidas”, afirma el comunicado. “Envío mi más sentido pésame a su familia”.

Sacks era amigo de la familia real y asistió a la boda del príncipe Guillermo y Kate Middleton en 2011.

Se desempeñó como rabino jefe de las Congregaciones Hebreas Unidas de la Commonwealth durante 22 años, desde 1991 hasta 2013. El ex primer ministro británico Tony Blair, quien describió a Sacks como “un hombre de enorme estatura intelectual pero con el espíritu humano más cálido”, le otorgó un premio a su trayectoria en 2018.

Sacks fue nombrado caballero por la reina Isabel II en 2005 y galardonado con un título vitalicio en la Cámara de los Lores británica en 2009. Se convirtió en un líder para judíos y no judíos por igual, tanto dentro como fuera del Reino Unido. Publicó más de 30 libros en todo su vida. Fue tratado con éxito por cáncer dos veces antes en su vida.

A Sacks le sobreviven su esposa durante 50 años, Elaine Taylor, sus tres hijos y varios nietos.
