Thomas Edelmann, de 49 años, nunca había conocido a su abuelo paterno, Wilhelm Edelmann, pero, según le dijo a CNN, escuchó rumores sobre el negocio familiar y sospechaba que anteriormente había sido propiedad de judíos.

Durante su investigación, descubrieron el registro de naturalización de Heidelberger en 1942 y su lápida junto a su esposa Emma, en el norte de Israel. También averiguaron que Heidelberger tenía una nieta viva, cuyo nombre era Hannah Ehrenreich. El maestro jubilado de 83 años todavía vivía en Israel, informó CNN.
Thomas, que nació en Alemania, dijo que sabía muy poco sobre la historia de su familia paterna, debido en parte al divorcio de sus padres cuando él era un niño. Tampoco tenía ninguna conexión con la cadena minorista que construyó su abuelo y que había surgido en la ferretería, informó CNN.
Según Thomas, la tienda ya no existía, pero su familia aún es propietaria del edificio, junto con otras propiedades en la ciudad. Sin embargo, él mismo no forma parte de la empresa, informó el medio.
A través de MyHeritage, Thomas pudo enviar una carta a Ehrenreich en inglés, sin saber que hablaba alemán. Thomas escribió en las cartas, publicadas por CNN, que sentía que era “su deber”, en nombre de su familia, comunicarse con respecto a la “injusticia” que soportaron sus abuelos, escuchar su historia y “escuchar y aprender”.
“Soy parte de la familia Edelmann y quiero dar el primer paso y escuchar su historia» dijo Thomas. «Entiendo que es posible que no vea ningún beneficio para usted en hablar conmigo», continuó.

Después de unas semanas de recibir la carta hablaron por teléfono. Su conversación fue principalmente en alemán y duró unos 90 minutos.
La pareja habló sobre el pasado de sus familias. Ehrenreich le dijo a Thomas que su abuelo, Benjamin, al que ella estaba muy unida, hablaba a menudo de su tierra natal y llevaba un diario en su lengua materna.
También le contó que su abuelo y abuela paternos usaron el dinero que obtuvieron de la tienda para huir en 1938.
Pasaron semanas antes de la Kristallnacht, también llamada la “Noche de los cristales rotos”. Aquella noche devastadora en el que los nazis incendiaron sinagogas, destrozaron hogares judíos y otras propiedades y mataron a muchos judíos. Unos 30,000 hombres judíos fueron arrestados y enviados a campos de concentración nazis.
Ehrenreich, con mucha tristeza, le comunicó a Thomas que sus abuelos maternos se habían quedado en Alemania. Le contó que habían muerto bajo el régimen nazi. Todas sus esperanzas y sueños se esfumaron por los nazis.
Luego compartió con Thomas algunas de las entradas personales que escribió su abuelo en su diario.
En una entrada, Heidelberger escribió: “Mi sucesor comercial, Wilhelm Edelmann, venía todos los primeros de mes a pagar el alquiler. «Y, aunque era miembro del partido nazi, era un hombre decente y no un antisemita”, expresó.
“Un día, Edelman se me acercó y me dijo que debería irme de Alemania lo antes posible. Había planes para actuar contra los judíos y se sintió obligado a advertirme a mí, su buen conocido”, escribió en otra ocasión.
Edelman le dijo a CNN que aunque su familia no habían sido buenas personas, Ehrenreich fue muy amable y no lo culpó por nada de lo que había sucedido.
Dijo que estaba profundamente conmovido por la llamada. Aseguró que él y Ehrenreich se han mantenido en contacto, y que espera algún día ir a Israel y conocerla.
