“Cuando murió mi padre recién tomé conciencia de lo que sufrió. Falleció cuando yo tenía veintidós años. Pude preguntarle poco sobre su historia. Fue después de mi Bar Mitzvá que me atreví a hacerlo. Él nunca había hablado de su pasado.

Su ser judío lo manifestaba cuando íbamos los viernes al Templo de Libertad o cuando hacía beneficencia en la comunidad. Ahí me enteré que mi padrino había sido el Rabino Schlesinger.

Yo estudié en colegios estatales y me crié entre gente alemana de ACIBA- Asociación Cultural Israelita de Buenos Aires- a la que llamaban con humor la IKAGUÉ por sus siglas en alemán -judishe kultur gemeinschaft -. Funcionaba en la calle Aráoz y tenía su sede en Olivos y Banfield, donde practicaba tenis, básquet, natación. Era mi programa de los domingos. Un bus nos recogía a los socios, en Callao y Santa Fe, bajaba por Callao y seguía hacia el sur.

Esa institución organizaba las ceremonias para las altas fiestas a las que
fuimos por años al Salón Unione e Benevolenza y los viernes tradicionalmente al Templo de Libertad.
Con el tiempo mi hermano y yo nos fuimos enterando de la historia acallada de nuestro padre, sobre su silencio. Personalmente lo llegué a comprender cuando supe que había estado en un campo de concentración. Mi madre por otra parte, que había nacido en Suiza, nos alertaba ante alguna travesura o situación que nuestro padre había sufrido mucho. Tuvimos una educación ieke, como se les decía a los judíos alemanes, o sea estricta. Mis
padres estaban de novios cuando él fue detenido por los nazis.

La historia de familia de ambos fue diferente. Ella vivía en Suiza y alternaba con Barcelona donde su padre tenía negocios. Mi padre había nacido en Emden, Alemania, y luego se fue a vivir a Oldenburg. Se mudaron cinco de los seis hermanos: mi padre, Sigfrido, mi abuelo Simón, mis tíos casi cuarentones todos solterones y entre ellos Fanny y Rita (la tercera, Hanna, ya había fallecido).

Como hermano mayor mi padre le prometió al suyo asumir la responsabilidad de hacerse cargo de ellas hasta que se casaran. La nueva casa era de tres pisos con ascensor, detalle de categoría para esa época.

Mi padre era representante de firmas textiles importantes de casimires de Inglaterra que vendía a grandes negocios y confeccionistas. Se había recibido en Alemania de tintorero industrial. Estaba bien posesionado económica y socialmente y como no manejaba tenía chofer.

Los judíos de buena posición solían ir a veranear a Ostende, en Bélgica, donde había hoteles con comida kosher.

Mi mamá también iba porque su padre, Moisés Mendelsohn, era ortodoxo.

Ella era hermosa y mi padre lucía como un señor apuesto. Había diferencia de edad, dato que figura en un libro que escribió y dejó de recuerdo
para nosotros.

Al conocerlo quedó atrapada por su seriedad y formalidad. Salieron a pasear, bailaron y luego, cada uno regresó a su país. Las cartas fueron tramando un romance epistolar que terminó en noviazgo. Antes de formalizar se encontraron en la Selva Negra con invitación de parte de mi padre. Ella a su vez invitó a una prima y mi padre a Walter, su hermano menor.

Ambos les habían pedido a sus respectivos compañeros de viaje que opinaran y apro-
baran o denegaran el romance. Así dos hermanos esperaron que llegaran dos
primas y como un cuento de hadas se formaron dos parejas. Esto habla de los formalismos de Europa y de los prejuicios de cómo una señorita no debía encontrarse a solas con un hombre.

Mi padre volvió a trabajar a Oldenburg y mi madre a Saint Gall, donde vivía, ciudad de habla alemana en Suiza, cercana a Zúrich que alternaba con sus viajes a Barcelona. Mi padre le propuso casamiento en febrero de 1938 en Oldenburg. Mi madre informada de lo que ya estaba aconteciendo en Alemania le sugirió que se fuera del país porque corría peligro. Mi padre negó tal crisis. El 9 de noviembre de ese año estalló la Kristallnacht, La Noche de los Cristales Rotos, soldados nazis llegaron a su casa llevándose a su hermano, a
su padre y a él.

Los tuvieron detenidos en el Departamento de Policía donde había también miembros de la SS. Al día siguiente los trasladaron a la cárcel que había sido el Palacio de Justicia. A mi abuelo lo liberan por viejo y a mi padre y hermano los cargaron en un tren hasta Orianenburg, a poca distancia del campo de concentración de Sachsenhausen.

En el campo padecieron hacinados en un galpón con cuatrocientas personas en el que entraban ochenta. Dormían en el suelo atrincherados.

El que iba hacer sus necesidades perdía el lugar. Era invierno, hacía frío, los
hacían trabajar en una fábrica de ladrillos distante y cargarlos a pie hasta el
campo. Fue allí donde comenzó a resentirse la salud de mi padre.

Todo esto lo supe años después cuando me atreví a preguntarle si había estado en un campo de concentración, a lo que me respondió afirmativamente. A la noche siguiente continué preguntando y me respondió que él y su hermano habían tenido la posibilidad de conseguir un visado por dinero para ir a Bolivia.

Ambos pudieron salir del campo de concentración, gracias a los buenos oficios de una secretaria, que mi padre conocía de una empresa textil, novia del oficial del campo. Y fue ella la que le pidió que le diera un trato especial porque era un “judío bueno”. Consiguieron el visado y pudieron salir. Al tomar el tren, en el momento de partir, subieron al andén dos oficiales de la SS gritando su apellido. Hasta regresar a Oldenburg tuvieron miedo
que los volvieran a buscar. Me confesó que fue una pesadilla y lloró… Ante mi
insistencia de más preguntas mi madre, con rigor, me advirtió que sufría de
taquicardia, y que si le pasara algo sería por mi culpa. Todo intento por saber
más quedó congelado.

La historia la completé treinta años después cuando quise ir a Berlín a ver con mis ojos el campo de concentración de Sachsenhausen. Debo confesar que mi papá como muchos iekes era muy alemán y hablaba con un fuerte acento lo que me hacía sentir acomplejado. Me transmitió los valores que debía tener un hombre de bien. Era un judío alemán tradicionalista a su manera, conservador en la creencia religiosa.

Nunca se había adaptado al país y tenía solo amigos alemanes. Estaba siempre triste y melancólico. Lo único que lo hacía feliz era su familia. Él trabajaba para la comunidad y sin hablar de su pasado.

Y siento que debe ser por eso que me dediqué a la enseñanza del judaísmo que heredé de lo que él no pudo tener por la Shoá, que fue y es el derecho de los judíos a vivir en libertad. Seguí su ejemplo de solidaridad como cuando enviaba paquetes de ayuda a su hermano en Israel o cuando daba ropa y comida a quienes lo necesitasen.

Paralelamente a esa educación yo iba a la escuela estatal. El secundario lo cursé en el Colegio Sarmiento, de la calle Libertad y Juncal, con compañeros hijos de jueces, políticos y profesionales.

En las elecciones internas ganaba la lista nacionalista. También concurría al Templo de Libertad adonde había llegado Marshal Meyer, rabino norteamericano, que revolucionó a
la comunidad porque venía de un país con amplísima libertad religiosa, adonde los judíos se manifestaban sin miedo. Yo pertenecía a un grupo de jóvenes que hacíamos actividades educativas y deportivas. Fui escalando en mi vida comunitaria, aprendí a conocerme mejor y ser instructor líder.

Fui progresando y ascendiendo en mis cargos a temprana edad. En ese tramo de mi aporte voluntario me di cuenta, coincidiendo con otros, que se hablaba poco o nada del Holocausto. Sabíamos por propia experiencia que eso les sucedía a los que lo habían sufrido porque para olvidar no hablaban de lo padecido.

Por ser judío tuve que defenderme en el colegio de provocaciones
que recibí en los cinco años de secundario.

Pero lo pasé mejor cuando me hice respetar. Un día me cansé ante una afrenta, hubo una pelea, ataqué con furia y salí ileso.

Se corrió la bolilla que yo era de cuidar. El rescate de la historia de mi padre comenzó cuando le dije a mi señora que quería ir a Berlín a ver con mis ojos el campo de concentración donde mi padre había estado.

Fuimos a Oranienburg y mi esposa, en el viaje, premonitoriamente, me preguntó qué haría yo si encontrara fotos de mi padre en el Museo del Campo Sachsenhausen. Me pareció improbable, una utopía.

Tomamos un taxi y en veinte minutos llegamos a destino.
Cuando entramos a la exposición del campo estaban pasando un documental con audio que hablaba de un tal Arthur De Beer, que resultó ser un primo de mi papá y cuya hermosa hija había sido abusada y marcada en la frente con la palabra hure, puta. No podía creer semejante casualidad y continué mirando imágenes y datos de otros prisioneros.

Conmocionado por lo que había visto terminé de paralizarme cuando encontré una foto
anónima sacada a los judíos de Oldenburg cuando fueron obligados a desfilar desde el departamento de policía hasta la prisión, ante la risa y burla de los que los miraban pasar. Entre ellos avanzaba mi padre junto al suyo y mi tío. Tal fue mi estado de shock que un guardia recayó en mi estado de estupor, se acercó y fue a llamar al que luego supe era el director del museo.

Había venido a buscarnos para invitarnos a pasar a su oficina. Me hizo preguntas sobre quién había sido al que identifiqué y, mientras conversamos, ya me estaban preparando una carpeta con datos de mi padre.
El director quería saber qué más podía aportar. Le dije que de Alemania nos íbamos a ir Zúrich a ver un tío, que también había estado junto a mi padre en ese campo.

Ya en Suiza continué con lo que me había propuesto, ir a visitar a mi tío
para seguir investigando.

Les conté a mis primos de dónde veníamos y de lo que habíamos visto. Dudaron de que yo pudiera cambiar su decisión de callar de su padre. Y fui a visitar al tío Walter. La sorpresa fue enorme porque se confirmaba lo que solía repetir mi madre de que era adinerado. Ella no lo quería porque nunca se había ocupado de sus hermanos en el otro lado del mundo,
tanto material como espiritualmente.

Tomando el té lo primero que hice fue poner sobre la mesa la foto de la barraca donde estuvieron juntos él y mi padre. Asombrado, a partir de ese momento pude mantener una conversación que fue importantísima para mi reconstrucción.

Fue la primera vez que habló de su pasado. Contó cómo se escaparon. Su relato no coincidía con el que mi padre me había contado. Dijo que salieron dejando sus pertenencias y le agregué la escena de los oficiales de la SS que los habían ido a buscar al tren cuando
estaba partiendo.

Mi tío lo ignoraba. Siguió el relato de cómo salieron con los trajes a rayas del campo, después de entregar el número de prisioneros.

Al salir del campo ya era de noche, hacía mucho frío y había gente de ayuda que indicaba una dirección a seguir donde serían recibidos, era en Oranienburg. Llegaron, fueron afectuosamente recibidos, tomaron sopa y abastecidos con ropa, pecheras como si fueran camisas con corbatas, sacos y sobretodos. Les cosieron la Estrella de David. Debían mostrar que no eran presos. Les daban hora y lugar dónde tomar los trenes para los destinos.

Se trataba de una red de ayuda de mujeres de Berlín, cuyos hombres estaban
prisioneros, instaladas cerca del campo para ayudar a los liberados. Era una
organización clandestina que los abastecía con dinero, alimento, abrigos y
pasajes. En cada estación había mujeres que hacían lo mismo. Todo esto me
lo contó mi tío.

Mi padre volvió a Oldenburg a hacerse cargo de sus dos hermanas como lo había juramentado. Era el momento del Juden Raus, judíos afuera, en el que los judíos podían irse dejando sus bienes para el Tercer Reich.

Ellos pudieron salir con las visas que sus novias consiguieron pagando, como tantos otros, antes de la Solución Final. El viaje de mi padre fue vía Panamá, Bolivia y Argentina. El de mi tío fue vía Suiza a Palestina. Al fallecer mi abuelo paterno las tías partieron a Bolivia donde con el tiempo se casaron.

Mi padre con los años las trajo a Buenos Aires. En medio de todo ese relato, con el que yo creía que me estaban pasando una película, también me enteré, que a mi padre el Rabino de Oldenburg le había presentado un banquero holandés a quien le dejó los bienes que nunca se recuperaron. Ese testimonio de mi tío me ayudó a seguir rescatando la historia de mi padre.

Otro hecho que ignorábamos mi hermano y yo, fue cuando al fallecer mi papá, mi mamá nos mostró la Estrella de David con la palabra Jude, judío y una tela con los cinco números que mi padre y todos los prisioneros debían usar. Pero él las escondió en el taco de su zapato. Nunca se supo porqué lo hizo.

Antes de largarlos del campo los despiojaban y les obligaban a dejar las identificaciones. Le podía haber costado la vida. Como mi madre siguió enojada con la familia de Suiza traté siempre de mantener el contacto. Yo volvía a visitarlos, no quería perderlos. Un día uno de mis primos suizos me dijo que quería recuperar la familia y con un abrazo cerramos esa profunda grieta consanguínea. Fue el puntapié inicial para ir recuperando los De Beer dispersos por el mundo de cuyas existencias ignorábamos.

Un día, otro primo, que reencontré y que estaba por casualidad en Chile, me preguntó, si yo podía dar los datos de lo que le había pasado a mi padre y a mi tío y dar testimonio. Era para un evento que se iba a hacer en Berlín sobre la Kristallnacht. Se trataba de una búsqueda internacional para ampliar información sobre los judíos prisioneros y asesinados en Sachsenhausen.

Así lo hice. A la curadora del campo le envié fotos de mi padre, mías, de mi familia y de todo lo que fuera útil para ampliar nuestro archivo. Hubo un indagatorio sobre el porqué mi padre había conservado el número y la Estrella, que no pude responder.

Un equipo del museo fue a Suiza a ver a mis primos que también colaboraron con valioso material. Uno de ellos iba a ser el orador en el Parlamento de Berlín. Me habían invitado a que fuera y respondí que no.

Recibí también la invitación al mismo que tenía como título:”En el país de los números donde los hombres no tienen nombre”.
En la programación figuraba que iba a hablar mi primo como hijo de un sobreviviente con una foto con el número 10259 de prisionero. Me quedé petrificado. Era el número que pertenecía a mi papá.

Se cerraba el círculo del olvido y se abría el de la reparación histórica basada en la memoria como un acto de Justicia. Cambié el no por el sí. Fui a Berlín y entregamos la tela con el número 10259, como donación para el museo del campo, prueba de haber sido mi padre prisionero para que fuera resguardada como documento. Final-
mente mi padre había recuperado su nombre.”

Mis palabras finales: este testimonio que he dado para este libro, que trata sobre la discriminación, tiene un broche de oro histórico: en el año
2021. La exhibición del Museo de Sachsenhausen en el Parlamento de Berlín
donde figura mi padre, tendrá lugar en Buenos Aires, ciudad adonde llegó
como sobreviviente y pudo formar una familia.
