Aunque en la televisión tenía fama de persona dura, Mauro era un hombre de familia. Casado con Leonor, había cumplido 48 años de matrimonio. Con ella tuvo a Ivana, quien decidió ser psicóloga como su madre, y a Jonathan, periodista como él. Como padre era muy protector de sus hijos y estaba muy orgulloso de ellos. “Son dos pibes bárbaros, solidarios, buenos amigos, muy queridos por todos”, decía. Amigo de sus amigos, todos ellos recordaban que Viale había sido un muy buen jugador de fútbol y que se destacaba en el medio campo. Entre sus más cercanos se contaba el ex presidente Carlos Menem. “Lo adoro y él a mí, hablamos hasta tres veces por semana. Mantenemos la amistad desde la época en que era gobernador”, contaba. Los primeros días de febrero, Mauro había sido entrevistado por su hijo Jony en el programa Pan y circo. En un momento, hablando de las muertes de Maradona, Menem y Leopoldo Jacinto Luque, aseguró que estas pérdidas lo ponían “en un lugar tremendo”. “Me hacen pensar en cuánto dura un instante. Un soplo y se terminó la vida”, dijo entonces. Parecía sólo una frase, aunque hoy daría la sensación de que fue una premonición.

El periodista Mauro Viale Z»L falleció este domingo a los 73 años, tras sufrir un paro cardíaco en el Sanatorio de Los Arcos. Allí se encontraba internado desde el día anterior por un cuadro severo de coronavirus. Será enterrado en el Cementerio de La Tablada

El conductor de A24 y América recibió la primera dosis de la vacuna contra el COVID-19 el pasado jueves. Dos días después, en la mañana del sábado, se conoció la noticia de que, tras experimentar síntomas compatibles con el virus, se hizo un hisopado y dio positivo. Luego fue trasladado a la terapia intensiva de la clínica por un cuadro de neumonía bilateral, aunque a las pocas horas sus allegados informaron que ya se encontraba en una sala común.

La noticia de su fallecimiento fue confirmada por el periodista Rolando Graña durante la edición de GPS. “Lamentablemente me toca dar la peor de las noticias que tuve que dar hoy y es que falleció Mauro Viale. Nuestro amigo, colega. Muchos años de trabajar con él. A veces, para nosotros dar una noticia no es solamente dar una noticia. Hoy estuve hablando con Jonathan (Viale, su hijo) temprano y me dijo que había mejorado, que estaba saturando mejor. Sin embargo, en las últimas horas se ve que algo pasó. Y Mauro, nuestro querido Mauro, con quien hemos compartidos tantos programas, tantas horas, tantas coberturas, tantos móviles, tantas discusiones en cámara y fuera de cámara, se nos fue”, expresó antes de pedirle disculpas al público y pedir una pausa.

Viale, por su parte, había mostrado su felicidad por darse la vacuna contra el COVID-19. “Hoy fui a vacunarme y lo primero que hicieron fue tomarme la temperatura. A mí me avisaron que podía llegar a darme fiebre. Están meta llamarme para preguntarme si tuve fiebre porque es muy peligroso que la vacuna actúe con ese efecto secundario. No tengo fiebre”, había dicho en su programa.

La mayoría asocia a Viale con el periodista de actualidad, que a veces jugaba al límite de la polémica. Pero mucho antes de meterse en la información dura, Mauro fue uno de los mejores relatores de la Argentina. Debutó en el periodismo deportivo en el año 1967, por Rivadavia y en el equipo de José María Muñoz. En los ’80 hizo una dupla imbatible con Enrique Macaya Márquez. Su voz está en la memoria de todos los futboleros de fines del siglo XX. Con un estilo propio, con información y una amplia cultura que no se limitaba al típico relato del partido.

En la radio comenzó como reportero, pero poco a poco se hizo notar y le empezaron a dar espacio como comentarista de diversos partidos de Primera División. Fue en mayo de 1977 cuando empezó su tarea más recordada en el deporte al relatar para Canal 7, que con la proximidad de la Copa del Mundo de Argentina se convirtió en Argentina Televisora Color (ATC). Con Macaya hizo el deleite de todos no sólo con el campeonato doméstico sino con la Selección, a la que acompañó para los Mundiales de 1978, 1982 y 1986. Comenzaba cada transmisión con un latiguillo: ‘Quién mueve’.

Un día decidió dejar el relato. Se habló de internas pero él aclaró que simplemente fue a hablar con Carlos Ávila y le manifestó: “Negro, no quiero relatar más, me aburrí”.

Después de dejar el fútbol, Viale se metió con todo en el periodismo de actualidad. Condujo “La mañana” y “La tarde” por ATC. Siempre mantuvo su estilo llano y frontal, del que llama las cosas por su nombre, lo que le valió amigos y enemigos, admiradores y detractores. A él jamás le importaron las críticas. Su slogan era “Digan de mi lo que quieran y yo le digo a cualquiera lo que se me canta”.
