Nacido el 18 de febrero de 1979 en Budapest, el rabino Zsolt Balla se ganó un lugar en la historia. Esta semana lo designaron como capellán judío en las fuerzas armadas de Alemania, el primero en casi cien años
En efecto, el ejército alemán tuvo rabinos hasta que fueron expulsados con la llegada del nazismo al poder, en 1933.

Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, cuando miles de judíos combatieron en el conflicto, las fuerzas armadas contaron con numerosos rabinos entre sus filas.

Un siglo después, en mayo del año pasado, el parlamento alemán aprobó de manera unánime reanudar el enrolamiento de rabinos en la Bundeswehr, las fuerzas armadas nacionales. Esta vez los religiosos atenderán a apenas 300 soldados judíos.

Y, esta semana, se conoció la designación para el puesto de capellán judío del rabino Balla, jefe de la congregación israelita de Leipzig desde el 2009. También a cargo de toda la comunidad de Sajonia desde el 2019.

El capellán es uno de los primeros rabinos ortodoxos formados en Alemania desde 1938

Balla estudió ingeniería en la Universidad Técnica de Budapest y vive en Alemania desde el 2002.

Después de asistir a la yeshiva Beis Zion, en Berlín, completó sus estudios rabínicos en el seminario de Hildesheim, también en la capital alemana. Se convirtió en uno de los primeros rabino ortodoxos formados en el país desde 1938.

Casado y con tres hijos, Balla es un gran conocedor de la situación de los judíos en Alemania. Es en este país donde en los últimos años se viene registrando un preocupante aumento del antisemitismo.

«El odio milenario a los judíos todavía está intolerablemente presente en el siglo XXI», afirmó Balla. Oficia en una de las dos únicas sinagogas que sobrevivieron al nazismo en todo el estado de Sajonia.

«Nuestras congregaciones y sus miembros lo sienten muy claramente y en esta situación nos sentimos cada vez más inseguros«, añadió el rabino.

En ese sentido, Balla reconoció durante una entrevista con el periódico alemán Leipziger Zeitung que las agresiones antisemitas están llevando a muchos judíos alemanes a pensar en dejar el país

«La cuestión de irse o quedarse, salir de Alemania o quedarse aquí, se convirtió en un problema para algunos miembros de la comunidad», subrayó el rabino. Además agregó: «todos deberíamos estar avergonzados de que se llegó a esto».

A pesar de todo, el rabino de origen húngaro tiene algunas razones para el optimismo. Es que la sinagoga de Leipzig, levantada en 1855, arrasada por los nazis durante Noche de los cristales rotos en 1938, y que tras el Holocausto llegó a tener apenas 25 fieles en 1990, ahora cuenta con 1.200 miembros.

Balla brindará cursos contra el antisemitismo para todos los soldados alemanes.
«Quizás no podemos ver cómo el mundo funciona, pero sí sabemos una cosa: solamente recordando el pasado y no dejando que nos paralice podemos tener la chance de avanzar hacia un futuro más brillante«, dijo el rabino sobre el renacimiento de la congregación de Leipzig.

«La historia se mueve hacia adelante, y las comunidades pueden renacer desde la nada», añadió Balla. Lo dijo en un video que preparó para una reunión de la Alianza Internacional para el Recuerdo del Holocausto (IHRA por su sigla en inglés).

Según se informó, el rabino asumirá su posición en la Bundeswehr «en unas pocas semanas». Con una ceremonia en la sinagoga de Leizpig que será transmitida en vivo por la televisión nacional y de la que participarán la ministra de Defensa, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, y el primer ministro de Sajonia, Michael Kretschmer.

Una vez en el cargo,  el rabino Zsolt Balla, quien no dejará su puesto en la sinagoga, estará a cargo de otros diez rabinos que prestarán servicios en las fuerzas armadas. También, se informó, participará de cursos de formación contra el antisemitismo para todos los soldados alemanes.
