Un avión de carga ligado a la Guardia Revolucionaria de Irán y que pertenece a una empresa que es objeto de sanciones de los Estados Unidos aterrizó este lunes en la Base Aérea El Libertador, a medio camino entre las ciudades de Palo Negro y Maracay, en Venezuela.

Se trata de una aeronave matrícula EP-FAB y es parte del portfolio de la empresa Qeshm Fars Air. Una compañía que fue sancionada por los Estados Unidos acusada de participar del envío de armamento a Siria.

Según informó la cuenta especializada ConflicsW, el avión partió el domingo por la noche de la capital iraní, Teherán, hizo una parada técnica en Mauritania y aterrizó en la capital venezolana alrededor de las 18.00 GMT.

Esta empresa fue sancionada por EEUU en enero de 2019. En ese momento, el Departamento del Tesoro norteamericano sostuvo que la “entrega de material letal” de la compañía a Siria “permite el apoyo militar de Irán” al presidente sirio Bashar al-Assad, por lo que la empresa entró en una lista negra.

El año pasado, más de una docena de vuelos de la compañía aérea iraní Mahan Air llevaron materiales para ayudar a reparar las refinerías de Venezuela. Irán también envió dos flotillas de buques cisterna con combustible a Venezuela, aliviando la aguda escasez de combustible en el país sudamericano.

Este no es el único vínculo entre Irán y Venezuela que causa preocupación en los Estados Unidos. El Pentágono aseguró este viernes estar “vigilando” el despliegue de dos buques de guerra iraníes. El destino final podría ser Venezuela, según medios estadounidenses, aunque evitó comentar cuál podría ser el objetivo de Teherán.

“Estamos vigilando el despliegue de estos dos buques”, confirmó John Kirby, portavoz del Pentágono, en rueda de prensa. Kirby indicó que “las preguntas” sobre “cuál es la intención” “deberían hacerse en Teherán”. “No voy a especular sobre lo que quieren intentar. Pero sí, lo estamos vigilando”, agregó.

Según medios estadounidenses, una de las embarcaciones que navega hacia el sur a lo largo de la costa este de África es el buque Makran. Es considerado el más grande fabricado en Irán y que cuenta con una plataforma para transportar hasta siete helicópteros.

Por ahora, tanto el gobierno de Irán como el de Venezuela, que gozan de estrecha relación, mantuvieron silencio al respecto acerca del destino final de las embarcaciones. Teherán se ha limitado a señalar que recorrerá aguas internacionales en el océano Atlántico.

La presencia de los buques de guerra puede suponer un desafío a la autoridad de Estados Unidos en la región. Además, puede inflamar el debate en Washington en torno a la decisión de la Administración del presidente Joe Biden de reabrir las negociaciones con Teherán.

A finales de mayo se retomó en Viena (Austria) la negociación para tratar de salvar el pacto nuclear de 2015. Se hizo con la expectativa de que haya un acuerdo para que Irán vuelva a cumplir sus compromisos y Estados Unidos se reincorpore.

Alemania, China, Francia, Reino Unido, Rusia e Irán, los países que permanecen en el pacto, tratan desde el pasado abril de retomar un acuerdo en contactos coordinados por la Unión Europea.

Estados Unidos, que abandonó el acuerdo en 2018 durante el mandato del ahora expresidente Donald Trump, participa en los contactos de forma indirecta, a través de intermediarios.

En agosto del año pasado, bajo el Gobierno de Trump (2017-2021), EEUU confirmó la incautación de un cargamento de combustible perteneciente al Cuerpo de los Guardianes de la Revolución iraní (IRGC, en inglés) que tenía como destino Venezuela.
