Cientos de personas se congregaron este jueves para protestar por las calles de Ramala, en Cisjordania, tras la muerte del activista Nizar Banat. Un crítico del presidente de la Autoridad Palestina (AP), Mahmud Abbas. La muerte ocurrió cuando estaba bajo custodia de las fuerzas de seguridad.

Los manifestantes mostraron carteles con la imagen de Banat y pancartas en su apoyo, además de pedir la renuncia de Abbas. La familia del fallecido denunció que sufrió abusos físicos por parte de las fuerzas de seguridad de la AP. Esto agravó aún más su ya deteriorado estado de salud.

El gobernador de Hebrón, Yibrin al Bakri, informó de que a Banat lo arrestaron en la madrugada de este jueves y, tras ello, «su estado de salud se deterioró». Mas tarde y sin dar más detalles al respecto, informaron que «tras ser visto por médicos, confirmaron su muerte».

El resto de las fuerzas de la oposición se unieron en la condena por la muerte de Banat, llegando incluso a calificarla de «asesinato». Tal es el caso del líder del Bloque de Reforma Democrática, Ghassan Jadala, quien pidió «una respuesta nacional masiva del tamaño de todo el odio que la AP tiene a sus oponentes».

Por su parte, el portavoz del Movimiento de Resistencia Islámica (Hamás), Sami Abu Zuhri, publicó en Twitter que la muerte de Banat es un «ajuste de cuentas». Parte de «la política sangrienta» de la AP y señaló que el primer ministro, Mohamed Shtayé, «tiene la responsabilidad principal de el crimen».

No era la primera vez que Banat fue detenido. En el pasado denunció en varias ocasiones a la Autoridad Palestina por supuestas violaciones graves contra los Derechos Humanos y por corrupción.

Crítico con Abbas, tenía planeado presentarse a las elecciones parlamentarias que iban a celebrarse en mayo.
