La cadena de televisión holandesa NPO1, que ofrece los partidos de la Eurocopa, se disculpó por incluir «por error» textos nazis en los subtítulos del himno germano. Fue en el partido de 8vos de final de la Eurocopa entre Inglaterra y Alemania.

«Deutschland, Deutschland über Alles, über Alles in der Welt» (Alemania, Alemania por encima de todo), podía leerse en los subtítulos del teletexto mientras sonaba en Wembley «Das Lied der Deutschen», pero retomando un pasaje del himno que sólo se utilizó en era nazi entre 1933 y 1945.

La letra original de «Das Lied der Deutschen» (La canción de los alemanes) fue escrita en 1841 por August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben. Y se hizo sobre una pieza de 1797 de Joseph Haydn. Se convirtió en el himno de Alemania en 1922, tras la Primera Guerra Mundial, y consta de tres pasajes.

Cuando Adolf Hitler llegó al poder en 1933, se mantuvo la melodía pero se cambió el texto. Se conservó sólo el primero de los tres pasajes, añadiendo a continuación versos del Partido Nazi.

Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en la que se enfrentaron entre otros ingleses y alemanes, se abandonó el himno. Era porque las potencias vencedoras lo asociaban a los nazis.

Pero con los años fue recobrando popularidad y en 1990 se recuperó para las citas oficiales, aunque manteniendo sólo el tercer pasaje y eliminando cualquier vínculo con la Alemania de Adolf Hitler.

«Durante los subtítulos en vivo del himno nacional alemán en el partido de la Eurocopa Inglaterra-Alemania se mostró por error un verso equivocado. Es un error de uno de nuestros subtituladores. Pedimos disculpas a los espectadores que se sintieron molestos por esto», se lamentó en Twitter el canal tras el encuentro en el que Inglaterra ganó por 2-0.
