La vacuna de Pfizer contra el COVID es mayormente eficaz para prevenir cuadros graves de los contagios de la variante Delta, aunque su tasa baja considerablemente ante estos casos, según una investigación publicada en Israel, donde la mayoría de la población está vacunada con esta fórmula.

El estudio realizado por la Universidad Hebrea y Centro Médico Universitario Hadassah indicó que la fórmula desarrollada por el laboratorio BioNTech alcanzó una eficacia de 70% contra la variante Delta, según informó la cadena nacional Kan, un descenso signifivativo con respecto a la tasa de 95% contra el virus original, pero muy por encima del umbral del 50% recomendado por la OMS.

El portal Ynet indicó que las cifras fueron presentadas ante las autoridades sanitarias, que en las últimas horas advirtieron que la variante Delta, de alta contagiosidad, aumentó su predominancia en el país: pasó del 60% al 90% de los casos nuevos en solo dos semanas.

Este lunes, las autoridades israelíes reportaron 343 casos de coronavirus, su cifra máxima en los últimos tres meses, en medio de un fuerte repunte. Asimismo, señaló que en estos momentos hay 2.597 casos activos en el país, incluidos 35 en estado grave. Mientras que la tasa de positividad ha aumentado hasta el 0,7 por ciento.

El despliegue de vacunas en Israel, que comenzó en diciembre, fue uno de los más rápidos del mundo. Convirtió al Estado judío en un caso de estudio muy seguido sobre si la inoculación masiva ofrece una salida a la pandemia. Las vacunaciones redujeron la transmisión a unos cinco nuevos casos locales al día, cifra que creció exponencialmente en las últimas semanas.

Ran Balicer, presidente del panel nacional de expertos en COVID-19 de Israel, advirtió por este descenso de eficacia. Consideró que es demasiado pronto para evaluarla con precisión frente a la Delta. Identificada por primera vez en la India en abril y que está surgiendo en todo el mundo. Esto se debe, en parte, al escaso número de casos entre los israelíes totalmente vacunados. Esos casos no están distribuidos uniformemente entre la población, lo que complica aún más los esfuerzos por llegar a conclusiones sobre los datos.

Balicer, también director de innovación de Clalit, la mayor organización de mantenimiento de la salud (HMO) de Israel, dijo a la AFP que la aparición de la variante Delta como “cepa dominante” en el país provocó un “cambio masivo en la dinámica de transmisión”.

Aproximadamente la mitad de los nuevos casos diarios se dan en niños, y la otra mitad en adultos, en su mayoría vacunados. “Hasta cierto punto, eso era de esperar, ya que el 85% de los adultos israelíes están vacunados”, dijo Balicer. “Pero las tasas en las que vemos estos casos de avance hacen creer que se extienden más allá de lo esperado. Sugieren que es probable que haya una cierta disminución de la eficacia de la vacuna contra la enfermedad leve, pero no la grave”.

En ese sentido, añadió que los expertos “mantienen la esperanza de que la eficacia de la vacuna contra la enfermedad grave siga siendo tan alta como lo fue para la cepa Alfa” identificada por primera vez en Gran Bretaña en diciembre.

El primer ministro israelí, Naftali Bennett, advirtió el domingo, antes de una reunión semanal del gabinete, que “con la variante Delta desbocada”, Israel podría tener que reintroducir ciertas restricciones que se levantaron el mes pasado para frenar la transmisión.

Balicer dijo que era poco probable que Israel pudiera contener el aumento de los casos sin que se volvieran a imponer más restricciones. Expresó la esperanza de que fueran leves y de que el “muro de vacunas” de Israel de ciudadanos inoculados ayudara a reducir la propagación.
