Se trató de un personaje ideal para Rand, quien nació en el seno de una familia ortodoxa de Bnei Brak, en los alrededores de Tel Aviv, en 1962.
“Ushpizin” (una palabra de origen arameo que significa “invitados”, en este caso para Sucot) fue su primera experiencia importante como actor de cine. La apuesta no podía haber salido mejor; La película fue nominada para varios premios Ophir, los “Oscar israelíes” y fue distribuida a nivel mundial.
Se cuenta que, para participar del proyecto, Shuli puso dos condiciones a los productores. Una que su esposa en la vida real (Michal Batsheva Rand) interpretara a su mujer en la ficción. La otra es que el filme no fuera exhibido en los cines durante el Shabat, al menos en las salas de Israel.

Para ese entonces, Shuli ya había alcanzado la categoría de celebridad en Israel. Un estatus que lo llevó a las páginas de rumores del espectáculo en medios laicos y religiosos.
¿La razón? Su casamiento con la actriz y presentadora televisiva Tzufit Grant. La noticia no debería llamar demasiado la atención, si no fuera por el hecho de que Rand es ultraortodoxo y Grant es laica y mundana.
La boda fue un suceso a nivel nacional en noviembre del 2021. A la ceremonia acudieron varios de los artistas más famosos del país, entre ellos los actores y músicos Orna Banai, Amir Benayoun y Shlomi Shaban.

Michal, quien también se había convertido en ultraortodoxa de adulta, acusó a Shuli de abandonarla “para perseguir a otras mujeres y de no mantener a sus siete hijos”, señaló Hannah Brown en el artículo del diario de Jerusalén.
También le entabló una demanda por 2,5 millones de shekel (unos 800.000 dólares) y se negó a aceptar el divorcio, que en Israel debe pasar por los tribunales religiosos.
