El papa Francisco recibió este miércoles en el Vaticano a la madre de uno de los rehenes capturados por Hamas el 7 de octubre en el sur de Israel, quien le mostró al pontífice sangrientas imágenes del secuestro tomadas por los propios miembros del grupo palestino durante el ataque terrorista.
«Este es mi hijo, sin un brazo, pasaron 47 días» desde que fue secuestrado, le dijo Rachel Goldberg, madre del rehén Hersh Goldberg-Polin, al papa Francisco al tiempo que le hacía ver un video en su teléfono celular.
Según las reconstrucciones de los hechos ocurridos durante la matanza de octubre, cuando Hamas asesinó a 1200 personas y tomó más de 200 rehenes, miembros del grupo terrorista destrozaron el brazo de Hersh antes de ser capturado.
«Una verdadera bendición»
La agencia de noticias del Vaticano recogió declaraciones de los familiares de secuestrados después de la entrevista con el Papa. Durante la rueda de prensa, Goldberg se declaró «honrada» y «agradecida».
Fue «una verdadera bendición haber tenido la oportunidad de reunirme» con el papa argentino. «Realmente sentí su empatía, sentí que él estaba con nosotros en nuestro dolor», afirmó la madre de Hersh.
En un video que circula por las redes sociales, se puede ver, en efecto, el rostro asombrado y compungido de Francisco mientras observa el video en el teléfono de Rachel.

«Sentí una conexión» con el Papa, «con su preocupación por nosotros y por toda la gente, por todos los rehenes y por toda la gente de Gaza que también está sufriendo, y eso me dio mucha esperanza», concluyó Goldberg.
Además de los israelíes, Francisco recibió también a familiares de residentes de Gaza, el enclave palestino donde Israel lanzó una operación militar para rescatar a los rehenes y destruir a Hamas.
El papa Francisco se reunió primero con los doce miembros de la delegación israelí en su residencia de la Casa Santa Marta a las 7:30 de la mañana, hora local, y a continuación recibió a la representación palestina «hacia las ocho de la mañana en una sala del Aula Paulo VI», señaló Vatican News.
«Sufren mucho, he oído cómo ambos (lados) sufren», dijo el Papa después de las reuniones. «Las guerras hacen eso», añadió el pontífice, quien pidió orar «por el pueblo palestino, por el pueblo israelí, para que llegue la paz».
