El embajador argentino en Estados Unidos, Gerardo Werthein, reemplazará a Diana Mondino al frente de la Cancillería. El presidente Javier Milei lo eligió a partir de los logros de su gestión en Washington. El diplomático también es vicepresidente del Comité Olímpico Internacional.
Mondino es desplazada luego que Argentina votara a favor de una resolución de la ONU que rechazaba el bloqueo de Estados Unidos a Cuba. Israel votó en contra (junto a EEUU) de esa decisión.
Werthein, hombre de confianza del jefe de Estado, secundó a Milei en reuniones que tuvo en suelo norteamericano incluso antes de asumir al frente del Poder Ejecutivo. Participó de la agenda del mandatario cada vez que viajó a EE.UU. y tuvo un rol destacado en su último paso por Nueva York, a fines de septiembre, cuando disertó ante la asamblea de la ONU, visitó la bolsa de Wall Street y se encontró con el magnate Elon Musk.
El flamante canciller es un destacado empresario que integró hasta 2019 el Grupo Werthein, uno de los holding de negocios más grandes del país vinculados al sector de las finanzas, las comunicaciones, los seguros y la agricultura, entre otros. Veterinario de profesión, desembarcó en el mundo de la dirigencia deportiva tras un recorrido en el ámbito de la equitación.
En estos meses al frente de la embajada, Werthein fortaleció los lazos bilaterales entre la Argentina y la Casa Blanca. También tuvo un rol activo en la captación de potenciales inversores para el país.

Llegará al Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores luego de que Javier Milei tomara la decisión de desplazar a Mondino por votar en contra de Estados Unidos e Israel, los dos principales aliados internacionales del Gobierno, en la asamblea de la ONU en la que se debatió levantar el embargo contra la dictadura de Cuba.
En las últimas semanas Mondino ya había tenido dos bajas importantes en su cartera: el vicecanciller Leopoldo Sahores, y el embajador en la ONU, Ricardo Lagorio, dos pesos pesados de la diplomacia.
El primero venía resistiendo como secretario de Relaciones Exteriores a pesar de ser uno de los apuntados por la alta dirigencia libertaria, en su lucha por imprimirle un sello propio a la política internacional del Gobierno. Lo reemplazó Eduardo Bustamante, quien hasta ahora era cónsul en Montevideo. El segundo protagonizó un fuerte cortocircuito con la Casa Rosada en la última Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas. En su lugar asumió Francisco Tropepi, otro diplomático de prestigio, quien secundaba en Washington al embajador Werthein.
